1) A premature cessation of rains for bimodal regions of southern Ghana, Togo, and Benin has led to increased moisture deficits and negative impacts. A delayed onset of the rainy season, followed by poorly-distributed rainfall has led to abnormal dryness across western and north-central Nigeria.

Key Messages:

April and May rainfall led to favorable conditions for crop development throughout the region as the season ranges from fully underway in the south to just beginning in the north.

In the northern part of the Sudanian-Sahlian zone where planting has not yet begun, timely sowing/planting is expected given the favorable medium term forecast for that area.

INFLUX OF CAR REFUGEES CONTINUES

The influx of refugees from CAR continues with more than 5,000 new arrivals per week. Since January, 62,000 new refugees have been registered. The status of some 5,000 persons recorded by authorities still has to be verified. The total of CAR refugees in Cameroon stands at 165,000.

TWO PRIESTS, ONE NUN KIDNAPPED

Two Italian priests and a Canadian nun have been kidnaped by armed men in Maroua district on 4 April. In November 2013 a French priest had been kidnapped in northern Cameroon and released one month later.

DAKAR, 31 August 2009 (IRIN) - Across West Africa residents are crossing streets in canoes, carrying babies overhead in suitcases and navigating waist-high water to find shelter.

This rainy season as of 27 August at least 37 people are dead from flooding across West and parts of Central Africa, more than 20,000 displaced living in shelters or with relatives and some 3,600 families homeless, according to the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) West and Central Africa office.

The figures change daily as heavy rains continue.
