The global burden of Improvised Explosive Devices

There is no day that goes past without the impact of an improvised explosive device (IED) making headlines around the world. Of all explosive weapons used, the IED is the most widespread, the most harmful and the most pernicious. Based on the belief that to overcome a problem, we must first understand it, this monitor is a small step in seeking to address the terrible realities of today.
It is a monitor that is, also, a response to a call to action.

Rainfall deficits in September in Mauritania and Senegal may affect crops

  • The seasonal rainfall has been globally average to above average (Figure 1 and Figure 2) over most of the region, but September rainfall has been below average over most of the Sahelian zone with pockets of severe deficits in areas of Senegal, Mauritania, Niger and Chad.

The 70th edition of Humanitarian Exchange, co-edited with Joe Read, focuses on the humanitarian crisis in Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin. The violence perpetrated by Boko Haram and the counter-insurgency campaign in Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger has created a humanitarian crisis affecting some 17 million people. Some 2.4 million have been displaced, the vast majority of them in north-eastern Nigeria. Many are living in desperate conditions, without access to sufficient food or clean water.

The targeting of ethnic and religious minorities, including women and children, has resurfaced. Killings and attacks against communities have been multiplying. Today, CAR is on the brink of sliding back into the same level of violence that led to the last conflict.

La prolifération des moustiques due aux pluies alimente la propagation de la dengue.
Le gouvernement a déclaré l’épidémie le 28 septembre.

DENGUE FEVER RAPIDLY SPREADING

The dengue fever outbreak is rapidly increasing. In the week that ended on 17 October, 1,130 new suspected cases were reported compared to 525 in the week ending on 8 October. Since the start of the year, 4,098 cases have been reported. The increase in mosquitoes due to rains is fuelling the spread of dengue. The Government declared an outbreak on 28 September.

Geneaina, Oct. 22 (SUNA) -The Sudan and Chad on Sunday launched, the third borders meeting for the return of Sudanese refugees resident in camps in eastern Chad, and the return of Chadian refugees from the Sudan to their homeareas.

The opening sitting of the meetings was addressed by the Minister of Social Affairs the acting Governor of West Darfur, Mohamed Ibrahim Sharaf Eddin, who commended the government and people of Chad for hosting the Sudanese refugees during such a long period of time.
