As of 30 October 2017, the total number of registered refugees and Asylum seeker stands at 12,137. This population is composed of 36,82% Congolese (DRC), 26.56% Chadian, 16,96% South Sudanese, 17.08% Sudanese, and 2.59% other nationalities. It is made up of 51.12% women and 48.88% men. Children account for 52.1% of the population, with 44% adults between the ages of 18 and 59, and 3.9% aged 60 and above. 57.7% of the refugees are staying in Haut-Mbomou prefecture, 21.2% in Ouaka, 20.7% in Bangui, and 0.4% in Mbomou.

Berlin / Abuja - The Government of the Federal Republic of Germany and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have announced that they will join forces to promote stabilization efforts in the Lake Chad Basin. Under the proposed initiative, titled “Integrated Regional Stabilization of the Lake Chad Basin”, Germany will grant UNDP EUR 6,000,579 million for the implementation of a series of projects aimed at restoring livelihoods and stability to crisis-affected communities.

(N'djamena, 16 November 2017): The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mr. Mark Lowcock, has approved the allocation of US $ 11 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) for humanitarian action in Chad. The funds provided will help meet the vital needs of 147,000 people, including returnees and refugees from the Central African Republic and their host communities, in four southern regions of the country.

HUMANITARIAN SITUATION

Some 4.7 million people in Chad need humanitarian assistance including 407,000 refugees from Sudan, CAR and Nigeria; and 87,000 Chadian returnees.

3.5 million people are food insecure in the Sahel belt of Chad, and global malnutrition rates are above the 15 percent emergency threshold in six of 23 regions. Two million people do not have access to safe drinking water and 1.9 million lack access to health services. Chad has the 3rd highest maternal mortality and sixth highest infant mortality rate in the world.

The cholera epidemic declared on 18 September is ongoing in Chad’s Salamat region, where 795 cases and 23 deaths have been reported.

A cholera epidemic in Chad has followed the Bahr-Azoum River along its meandering path southward, from the eastern Sila region to the more heavily populated district of Am Timan, in Salamat, near the Central African Republic.

Many people wash and bathe in the river, and even drink from it.

The World Bank is moving ahead to support low-income countries hosting large numbers of refugees. Under the 18th replenishment of the International Development Association (IDA18) – the Bank’s fund for the poorest countries – a $2 billion financing window is now available to help manage these crises with longer term solutions, which will benefit both refugees and host communities. Eight countries in Africa, South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa regions have been found eligible for assistance so far, and discussions are underway with several other countries for potential support.

The Africa Nutrition Report, launched today in Abidjan, Ivory Coast also indicates that a growing number of children under five years old are overweight.
