ABIDJAN, 31 December (IRIN) - West Africa could point to the consolidation of peace in Sierra Leone and the end of a 14-year civil war in Liberia as positive regional developments in 2003.
GENEVA, Dec 23 (UNHCR) - As large numbers of Sudanese refugees continue arriving in eastern Chad, the UN refugee agency today announced plans to move an initial group of 10,000 from the volatile border to a safer site further inland.
MSF: Since the beginning of December, at least 26 000 refugees have arrived in eastern Chad having fled the escalating conflict in the Darfur region of northern Sudan, according to MSF teams working at the border.

Robert Kaimiessim has never wanted anything other than to be a teacher. In his hometown of Bangui, capital of the Central African Republic, he teaches third grade at primary school.
But Robert is no longer in Bangui. Following the coup d’etat in March 2003, he was forced to flee, and, along with 40,000 of his compatriots, ended up in neighbouring Chad.
Continuing fighting in western Sudan has prompted concern that more people will flee into neighbouring Chad, to join the estimated 65,000 who have already crossed the border. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has launched an appeal for 2.3 million Swiss francs (US$ 1.8 million) to support the Red Cross of Chad (CRT), which is playing a key role in bringing them assistance.
Khartoum (dpa) - The presidents of Sudan and Chad agreed Wednesday to organize a conference of all border tribes that would seek to end violence in Sudan's Darfur region, the state-owned Sudan News Agency (SUNA) said.
Sudanese President Omer Hassan al-Bashir and Chadian President Idris Deby called for the conference after a two-hour meeting Wednesday evening in the Sudanese capital Khartoum.

ADRE, Chad, Dec 8 (UNHCR) - Nearly 10,000 more Sudanese refugees have fled to eastern Chad to escape an escalation of conflict in the Darfur region of western Sudan, bringing total numbers to more than 75,000.
