General Situation during January 2003
Forecast until mid-March 2003

The Desert Locust situation remained calm during January. Although conditions continued to be favourable in the winter breeding areas, no locusts have been reported in these places. Only isolated adults were present in Niger, southern Algeria and northern Somalia. There was an unconfirmed report of adults and hoppers in northern Mali. During the forecast period, small-scale breeding could occur along the Red Sea coasts. No significant developments are expected.

03 Jul 2002 description

Over 70 million cubic metros of water destroyed Saison village after breaking Saison dam in Ham province of Syria on 10 June 2002. The water killed 20 people, devastated 270 houses fully, as well as damaged 300 livelihoods, gardens and farmlands. The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) sent immediately a team to discuss the Syrian Arab Red Crescent concerning dispatching food and non-food aids to the affected area. At present, 105 relief tents donated by IRCS to shelter people who have returned to their village.

On June 4 the Zaizoon Dam, located 93km north-west of the Hama town (298 km north of Damascus) developed a crack in the retention wall.

Damascus (dpa) - Saudi businessman Prince Waleed Bin Talal has offered to rebuild Zeyzon village, where 22 people were killed and thousands left homeless when a dam burst June 4, the Syrian government announced Monday.

Talal met with Syrian President Bashar Assad and other leading government officials on his plan to reconstruct 500 houses and restore utilities and telephone service.

Talal's offer includes rebuilding schools and constructing a hospital and a number of new mosques.

Damas-9-6-Sana - Les assistances aux sinistrés de l'effondrement du barrage de Zézoune continuent à arriver à l'aéroport de Damas.

Un deuxième avion algérien est arrivé à Damas portant à bord /35/ tonnes d'assistances alimentaires et médicales et des couvertures aux sinistrés de l'effondrement du barrage de Zézoune.

Des assistances ont été arrivées par terre de l'Arabie Saoudite comprenant des tentes, des couvertures et des aliments.

Le Caire 9/6 Sana - Une équipe française de l'association des communications sans frontières est arrivé aujourd'hui à Damas dans le cadre des aides accordées par la France aux sinistrés de la rupture du barrage de Zaizoun.

L'équipe française restera dans la région de Zaizoun jusqu'à la fin de sa mission.

D'autre part, le comité de sauvetage de l'association du Croissant Rouge égyptien a décidé aujourd'hui d'envoyer des aides humanitaires urgentes aux sinistrés de la rupture du barrage de Zaizoun.
