Professor Moses Joloba, Director of Uganda's Supranational Reference Laboratory, leads his team to pursue TB – the world’s leading killer among infectious diseases. The disease killed more than 1.6 million people around the world in 2017.

Tropical Cyclone FANTALA formed over the south-western Indian Ocean on 11 April. It then moved west, intensifying. It passed near Farquhar Atoll (Seychelles) on 17 April at 6.00 UTC with max. sustained wind speed of 241 km/h and on 19 April at 18.00 UTC with max. sustained wind speed of 157 km/h, causing widespread damage. On 21 April at 6.00 UTC its centre was located approx. 230 km southwest of the Agalega islands (Mauritius) and 640 km northeast of Madagascar and it had max. sustained wind speed of 167 km/h.

GENEVA - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Fund have signed a US$10.5 million grant to address human rights barriers faced by vulnerable communities in Africa, and facilitate access to lifesaving health care. The grant is the first of its kind and will cover 10 countries including Botswana, Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Senegal, the Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

Meeting in its 146th Session, the Governing Board of the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has approved financing of nearly US$264 million to boost socio-economic development in over 30 partner countries. Of the new commitments, over US$193m will support 10 public sector loans and nine grants. The bulk of the public sector funding will co-finance agriculture, transportation, education, energy, health and water supply and sanitation projects.

Meeting in its 145th Session, the Governing Board of the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has approved financing over US$403m to boost socio-economic development in over 35 partner countries. Of the new commitments some US$306.04m went to support 14 public sector loans and seven grants. The bulk of the public sector funding will co-finance transportation, education, energy, poverty reduction, and water supply and sanitation projects. Under OFID’s private sector and trade finance programs, eight projects totalling US$97m were approved.

In Somalia, over 100 people have reportedly died from the disaster.

The Vice Premier of Taiwan, Ms. Yeh Chu-lan, announced Taiwan's pledge to donate US $50 million in aid to the most affected countries that were hardly hit by the recent earthquake and tsunami in South Asia. This assistance package will include food and medical supplies, as well as community-based reconstruction and rehabilitation projects. This amount is to be added to the estimated US $10 million that several Taiwanese charities, including various religious organizations, have already collected.
