After only two years of implementation of Intensified Capacity Building (ICB) in Hennan Province, the branch has recorded impressive achievements:

• The new structure benefitted 7,000 people through sustainable services

• Grassroots Red Cross organisations have increased from 90 to 3,100

• The number of volunteers increased from 10,000 to 30,000, and staff from 100 to 8,000

ANGOLA:
A CERF application has been submitted for US$ 7.67 million, but the amount will be reduced to US$ 5 million. The total amount required for the humanitarian response is around $104 million. The total number of affected people is 2,223,096 of which 1,833,900 are directly affected by food insecurity in 7 provinces. This includes 294,209 children under the age of 5 who are affected by acute malnutrition. In addition, 150,000 people are in need of water supply.

MIGOMBANI, Zanzibar (AlertNet) – The East African archipelago of Zanzibar is attempting to win “environmental independence” from Tanzania by joining an organisation that promotes the sustainable development of islands in the Indian Ocean.

Zanzibar has lodged a formal membership application with the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), a regional cooperation body whose current members are Comoros, Mauritius, Seychelles, Madagascar and Reunion.

In 2003 the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) was established by the assembly of the African Union (AU) aiming to raise agricultural productivity by at least 6% per year and increasing public investment in agriculture to 10% of national budgets per year. After an initial phase focused primarily on interventions at the national level, there is growing awareness on the need to work more on the regional dimensions of the CAADP.
