Opération « Ramadan à la maison» à Kaga-Bandoro
Du 12 au 14 juin 2018, l’opération dénommée « Ramadan à la maison » s’est poursuivie à Kaga-Bandoro toujours avec le concours du HCR, OIM, et PARET et a permis d’assister le retour de 148 ménages de 368 personnes déplacées internes du site Mbella vers la ville de Kaga-Bandoro. Chaque ménage a reçu 50,000FCFA du PARET et des kits NFI de l’OIM constitués de kits cuisine, nattes, couvertures, bâches, bassines et lampes.

June 20, 2018 – On July 9, 2018, the UN Security Council will hold its Open Debate on Children and Armed Conflict (CAC), under the presidency of Sweden, current chair of the Security Council Working Group on CAC. At the debate, the Secretary-General (SG) will present his annual report on CAC, pursuant to Security Council Resolution 2225 (2015), covering January 1 to December 31, 2017. Sweden will take the opportunity of the debate to highlight protection of children’s rights and prevention of future violations, and plans to introduce a resolution for adoption.

  • A total of 125,837 vulnerable individuals including Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and South Sudanese Refugees (SSR) received life-saving integrated health and nutrition services.

  • The Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Mark Lowcock, visited Sudan in May. He urged the international community to step up humanitarian response to 7.1 million vulnerable people and invest in the country’s social-economic development, expressing particular concern for women and children, and the need to protect them.

The South Sudan Regional Refugee Response Plan (RRRP) 2017 articulates the regional protection and humanitarian needs of an anticipated 2.13 million South Sudanese refugees by 31 December 2017. The RRRP outlines the inter-agency response strategy and financial requirements of 58 agencies responding across six countries of asylum: Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo,
Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda.

Ugandan officials have begun segregating refugees after a rise in ethnic tensions led to the deaths of four South Sudanese, including a teenager.

Security agencies have been heavily deployed in northern Uganda’s refugee settlements, home to more than 1 million people, in response to unrest between the warring ethnic groups that have fled conflict in South Sudan.

Natural disasters and conflict has forced 8.5 million people to flee their homes across South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya. Conflict is the largest driver of displacement – with children often witnessing or experiencing horrific violence, exploitation and abuse.

• Families facing starvation:
More than 12 million children go to bed hungry across South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya everyday. Children don’t have enough to eat because of various crises – drought, conflict, flooding or hyperinflation.

• Alarming malnutrition rates:
In the lead up to the lean season of May–July 2018, the nutrition situation is expected to deteriorate significantly as a result of unprecedented levels of food insecurity, outbreaks of diarrhea and other illness, poor infant and young feeding practices as well as limited access to services due to the heavy rains. During this period, the counties of Leer and Mayendit in Unity and Longochuk and Renk of Upper Nile are expected to reach Extreme Critical levels (IPC Phase 5) as per the IPC for Acute Malnutrition Classification (GAM ≥ 30%).

Key Messages

• Every day, refugees fleeing South Sudan arrive at Uganda’s borders, escaping violent conflict, a deteriorating economic situation and lack of basic services. Since 2013, more than 1 million South Sudanese refugees have arrived in Uganda and 85 per cent of these refugees are women and children.

• South Sudanese children fled into Uganda after being exposed to intense levels of violence, malnutrition, exploitation and other forms of abuse. The effect of this exposure needs to be mitigated.
