October 19, 2018 (JUBA) - The military and political leadership of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement and Army In Opposition (SPLM/A-IO) has issued a statement denying claims that its fighters have been involved in abuses against civil population in Western Equatoria region, pushing blames instead on the government forces and local commanded militia groups allied to senior government officials at the national level.

Juba/Geneva – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has facilitated the release of 24 persons detained in relation to the conflict in South Sudan, including 16 detainees released on Friday.

This week marks the first releases of prisoners supervised by the ICRC and following the signing of the latest peace agreement in which parties to the conflict agreed to free detainees.

(MissionNewswire) Uganda hosts close to 1.3 million refugees, the majority coming from South Sudan which is 45km from the border. Salesian missionaries are providing pastoral, social development and educational initiatives to refugees living in the Palabek Refugee Settlement in northern Uganda.

The Palabek Refugee Settlement is currently home to 42,000 people with an average of 300 new refugees from South Sudan arriving each week. It was officially set up in April 2016 to reduce congestion in larger refugee camps in the northwestern corner of Uganda.

IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) team conducted a multisectoral survey in Wau Town, from 7 July to 5 August 2018, interviewing 2,093 households representing 16,604 individuals.

More than half of all interviewed households reported that they were currently displaced (62%), representing 8,670 individuals (1.3).
