Context and Methodology

Introduction

Following the outbreak of violence in Juba in early 2016, the conflict in South Sudan and especially the Greater Equatoria region (Western, Central and Eastern Equatoria states) escalated. Many areas of Western Equatoria State are largely inaccessible to humanitarian actors due to insecurity. As a result, only limited information is available on the humanitarian situation outside of a few large towns and displacement sites.

**60 percent of the population in South Sudan faced Crisis or worse levels of food security from July to August this year. This was among the main findings of the latest release by IPC, an initiative responsible for consolidating and analysing data on food security. The release gave little hope for the future. Seven states where expected to reach Catastrophe levels of food insecurity by September, and similar levels were projected for several regions for the year to come.

Renk Town is located in Renk County, Upper Nile State, near South Sudan’s border with Sudan. Since independance in 2011, Renk has been a major destination and transit point for returnees from Sudan and, since the beginning of the current conflict in 2013, for internally displaced persons (IDPs) fleeing conflict in Upper Nile State.

Introduction.

Increased conflict in the Greater Bahr el Ghazal (GBeG)1 region led to waves of displacement and the further deterioration of food security between April and June 2018.
Armed clashes in Western Bahr el Ghazal (WBeG) State and the Greater Tonj area2 negatively impacted the ability of affected communities to meet primary needs and resulted in restricted humanitarian access to both areas. Meanwhile, environmental factors triggered severe food insecurity in Northern Bahr el Ghazal (NBeG) State.

Context and Methodology

Nyal town is located in Northern Panyijiar County, Unity State, along the banks of the Sudd, the third largest swamp in the world. Since the beginning of the crisis, IDPs from Unity and Jonglei States have perceived Nyal as a safe location with ample resources. Recently, Nyal has also become a key location for people travelling to and from nearby islands.

Introduction

Ongoing conflict in Jonglei continued to negatively affect humanitarian needs in the second quarter of 2018. The onset of the peak lean season saw deteriorating food security conditions in many locations across the state.

Clashes between armed actors and pervasive insecurity, particularly in the Greater Akobo area caused displacement among affected communities, negatively impacting the ability of populations to meet their primary needs.

Introduction

Eastern Lakes continued to be affected by intercommunal violence and cattle raids, particularly in areas near county borders. Throughout the third quarter of 2018, most indicators remained relatively low but stable, which suggests that critical barriers to access to food and basic services persisted in the region. Furthermore, food insecurity remained high, particularly in Yirol East and Yirol West Counties, as the lack of rain further added to the challenges in crop production between July and September 2018.
