DENMARK LAUNCHES EMERGENCY RELIEF FUND

Denmark has launched an emergency relief fund, drawing on the Start Fund’s experience, to allow the country’s grassroots organisations to respond to crises around the world. The Danish Emergency Relief Fund (DERF) is also open to funding for smaller NGOs within countries affected by crisis.

The Danish Minister for Development Cooperation, Ulla Tørnæs, is now increasing Denmark’s humanitarian assistance to combat the acute food security crisis in the Horn of Africa and Yemen. Denmark will provide 300 mio. DKK (approx. 42,8 mio. USD) in humanitarian assistance to the World Food Programme (WFP), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and to Danish NGO’s working in the affected countries.

The Heads of Mission express their grave concern at the potential consequences of the passing of the non-governmental organisations bill, and the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission bill in Parliament on 2 February.

In extension of his visit to the year’s most important summit in the African Union, Minister for Foreign Affairs Kristian Jensen launches a new Danish country policy paper for Denmark’s engagement in South Sudan, one of the world’s most fragile countries.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Kristian Jensen, states:
“Denmark has been a loyal supporter of the South Sudanese – even before their independence from Sudan in 2011 – and I am pleased to announce Denmark’s continued support of the South Sudanese people’s efforts to build a unified and peaceful country”.
