The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Ms. Marta Ruedas, today welcomed the decision by the Government of Sudan to open a new humanitarian corridor for food aid to be delivered by the UN World Food Programme (WFP) from El Obeid in central Sudan to Bentiu, a town in Unity State, South Sudan, where 100,000 people are enduring famine amid a deepening humanitarian crisis across the country.

Khartoum, 6 November 2014. The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan a.i., Mr. Geert Cappelaere, has expressed deep concern that children in conflict affected areas of South Kordofan and Blue Nile may again be at high risk of contracting polio.

Sudan was recently declared polio free, but two new cases have emerged this week in South Sudan’s Unity state, near the border with South Kordofan, increasing the risk that the virus may return to Sudan.

Khartoum, 26 August 2014. The United Nations welcomes the approval last week by representatives of the Governments of South Sudan and Sudan of an operational plan that will open a humanitarian corridor between Sudan and South Sudan. Developed and prepared by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the plan will enable WFP to deliver close to 63,000 metric tonnes of life-saving food assistance to 744,000 people in the northern parts of South Sudan who have been affected by the conflict in South Sudan since December 2013.

Khartoum, 3 June 2014. The United Nations welcomes the reaffirmation made by the Government of Sudan at the Oslo Humanitarian Pledging Conference for South Sudan on 20 May to maintain its borders open to South Sudanese fleeing violence and insecurity in their country. We commend and appreciate that Sudan has granted unrestricted access to its territory to more than 85,000 South Sudanese since the outbreak of violence in South Sudan on 15 December 2013.

Khartoum, 30 April 2014. The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Mr. Ali Al-Za’tari, expressed concern over an increasing number of people from South Sudan seeking refuge in the Abyei area. Over the past few days, at least 3,000 people have arrived in a number of locations in Abyei after fleeing violence in Unity State, South Sudan. These newly arrived people from South Sudan join an estimated 3,000 people who sought shelter in the area earlier this year.

(Juba/Khartoum, 3 September 2013): On behalf of the humanitarian community, we encourage the Governments of South Sudan and Sudan to implement fully the Agreement on the Status of Nationals of the Other State, signed on 27 September 2012, which provides for the four freedoms of residence, movement, property and economic activity to nationals in each other’s state.

The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Mr. Ali Al-Za’tari, has expressed deep concern at reports of raids and looting of markets by armed groups in both South Kordofan and North Kordofan that have recently forced yet more civilians to flee their homes, and also at reports of high numbers of people who have been fleeing to South Sudan to escape the continued fighting and severe food shortages in South Kordofan and Blue Nile.

The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Mr. Ali Al-Za’tari, has welcomed the continued progress in the airlift from Khartoum to Juba of some 12,000 people of South Sudanese origin who had been stranded for many months at a way-station in Kosti, waiting for onward transportation to South Sudan. The airlift is managed by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and supported by the Governments of Sudan and South Sudan.

Khartoum, 24 February 2012. The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan a.i., Mr. Mark Cutts, has welcomed the return today of United Nations international staff to South Kordofan State. This follows a decision made earlier by the Government of Sudan to authorize their return. The first two international staff arrived today in the state capital, Kadugli.
