NEW YORK (23 October 2017) – The tragic reality of famine around the world has revealed that many States are failing to uphold their legal responsibilities, the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Hilal Elver, told the UN General Assembly in New York today.

She also called for an urgent shift in thinking away from crisis reactions and toward famine prevention.

GENEVA (20 September 2017) - The Commission witnessed tens of thousands of South Sudanese women and children arriving in Ethiopia just last week, after walking in some cases for months to reach safety. Like hundreds of thousands of others civilians over the last year, they were subjected to collective punishment by government forces, based on ethnicity and their perceived support for the opposition.

In the present report, submitted to Human Rights Council pursuant to its resolution 31/20, the Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan gives an overview of the situation of human rights in South Sudan, and assesses the implementation of the provisions on transitional justice of the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan signed by the parties to the conflict in August 2015.

JUBA/GENEVA/NEW YORK (17 February 2017) – At the end of a four-day visit to South Sudan, the UN Assistant Secretary-General for human rights, Andrew Gilmour, called for those committing atrocity crimes in the country to be held accountable.

“This is a war that has been waged against the men, women and children of South Sudan,” he said. “And the only way of ending this onslaught will be when the perpetrators face consequences for what they are doing.”
