The Human Rights Council this afternoon held an interactive dialogue with the Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan.
Yasmin Sooka, Chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan, said that the Commission during its mission to South Sudan had heard testimonies of wanton killings and numerous accounts of brutal sexual violence. Arbitrary detentions and torture had also increased in the country. Despite the stated commitment of the authorities to address sexual violence, little had been done.
GENEVA (17 September 2018) -- The Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan called on the Government of the world's youngest state to use the opportunity created by the renewal of the peace agreement to ensure justice and accountability for the victims of the many crimes committed against its population.

It is an honour to be called to this mandate, to assist States to uphold the human rights of their people, in this year in which we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
GENEVA (7 September 2018) -- The United Nations Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan welcomed the jail sentence of 10 soldiers handed down yesterday in the Terrain Case, urging the Government to continue to seek justice for the many Sudanese victims of sexual violence and other crimes committed since the outbreak of a civil war in 2013.
The United Nations Human Rights Council will hold its thirty-ninth regular session from 10 to 28 September 2018 in the Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Room at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.
At the opening of the session at 9 a.m. on Monday, 10 September, the Council will hear an update on the situation of human rights worldwide and on the activities of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights by Michelle Bachelet, the newly appointed United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
JUBA (20 August 2018) – Members of the UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan will today begin their fifth field mission to South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Sudan and Ethiopia. The mission will take place from 20 to 31 August 2018.

A few days ago, we celebrated the centenary year of Nelson Mandela’s birth. We spoke of his example; his fortitude, his suffering and compassion, while recalling also the declaration that he and my predecessor Mary Robinson signed in 2000 on diversity and tolerance.
GENEVA (6 March 2018) - The Human Rights Council in its midday meeting held a clustered interactive dialogue with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on violence against children, Marta Santos Pais, and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for children and armed conflict, Virginia Gamba.
In its resolution 31/20 of 23 March 2016, the Human Rights Council established the Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan for a period of one year, and requested the Commission to, inter alia, monitor and report on the situation of human rights in South Sudan to make recommendations for its improvement, and to assess past reports on the situation of human rights since December 2013, in order to establish a factual basis for transitional justice and reconciliation.

The Human Rights Council this afternoon heard statements from dignitaries of 11 countries and two organizations and closed the second day of its high-level segment.
Edward Nalbandian, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Armenia, said Armenia continued to implement the national plan of action for human rights protection, had a good record of submission of national and follow-up reports to the treaty bodies, and would submit the Universal Periodic Review second mid-term report on a voluntary basis.

It is an honour to present the annual report of the Human Rights Council to this General Assembly. I would like to begin by congratulating the fifteen recently elected Members of the Human Rights Council. I have full confidence that all Members will work hard to uphold the promotion and protection of human rights.
NEW YORK (23 October 2017) – The tragic reality of famine around the world has revealed that many States are failing to uphold their legal responsibilities, the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Hilal Elver, told the UN General Assembly in New York today.
She also called for an urgent shift in thinking away from crisis reactions and toward famine prevention.
GENEVA (20 September 2017) - The Commission witnessed tens of thousands of South Sudanese women and children arriving in Ethiopia just last week, after walking in some cases for months to reach safety. Like hundreds of thousands of others civilians over the last year, they were subjected to collective punishment by government forces, based on ethnicity and their perceived support for the opposition.
