On behalf of the China Red Cross Society, the Chinese Embassy in Uganda has today handed over items worth 202,300USDs (Approx. UGX 1 billion) to Uganda Red Cross Society. The items were donated by the China Red Cross Society and channeled to Uganda through the China Sinopharm International Corporation, a privately owned company that coordinated the transportation of the goods up to the final recipient (Uganda Red Cross Society). Since fighting broke out in South Sudan in July 2016, more South Sudanese refugees have continued entering Uganda fleeing violence and atrocities against humanity. This population movement has drastically increased number of south Sudanese refugees in Uganda. On a daily basis, Uganda receives about 2000 refugees from S. Sudan. Uganda Red Cross Volunteers on June 26th braved the night, cold and bloody boarder of Nimule – Connecting Uganda to South Sudan in rescue of refugees fleeing uncertainty when fighting broke out in Wau, South Sudan forcing thousands of people to flee to Uganda. The situation has since been tense and alarming. Hundreds of lives have been claimed in the fights and many more rescued because of the presence of Humanitarian support from key players like Uganda Red Cross.

On 20th June 2015, Uganda Red Cross Society joined other operating and implementing partners for Adjumani refugee settlements for the celebration of the world refugees’ day 2015 celebrated in Adjumani. The theme of the day was “REFUGEES ARE REGULAR PEOPLE, GET TO KNOW & SUPPORT THEM”. According to guest of honor, Gen. Moses Ali, the 2nd deputy prime minister, the theme reminds us that refugees have capacities just like any other person and these capacities have to be put to use.

Freda Kajoki Igga, 28, is a volunteer at the Adjumani branch of the Uganda Red Cross Society. Since January 2014, she has been registering refugees fleeing violence in South Sudan. She has also been issuing ration cards and non-food relief items to the refugees.

At least each day that passes more South Sudanese refugees enter Uganda and are registered at designated areas in Adjumani and Arua. Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) registers between300 to 700 refugees at Nyumanzi Reception Centre in Adjumani district on a daily basis.This in a way calls for more services ranging from health, water, food and other essential basic life requirements.

The exercise supported by Uganda Red Cross Society is conducted at the camp where health teams and Red Cross medical volunteers immunize between 800-900 children on a daily basis.

URCS Under Secretary General Dr. Bildard Baguma who was on a monitoring visit to refugee operations in West Nile said the aim of immunization is to avert any disease outbreak among the children given the history of Polio in South Sudan.

Uganda Red Cross Society is providing phone call services to South Sudan refugees who want to contact their relatives and families back home. Three phones operated by URCS tracing assistant that have been deployed in the camp.

According to Olive Twikirize, URCS Tracing Assistant managing the phone service, a total of 245 refugees with phone numbers have approached the Red Cross tracing desk in Dzaipi Transit Camp to make phone calls in South Sudan.

The Government and humanitarian agencies are in a joint inter-agency rapid assessment of the South Sudan Population Movement. This was reached at during an inter-agency stakeholder coordination meeting chaired by the Office of Prime Minister.

The agencies to participate in the two day assessment that kicks off on Sunday (January 5) are Uganda Red Cross Society, UNHCR, WFP, UNICEF, FAO, LWF, HIJIRA, MTI, MSF, DRC, Inter-Aid among others.

There has been more refugee influx in Adjumani district from South Sudan in the month of May. 923 refugees arrived in the district on 24th May 2012 mainly through Elegu border. Majority of the refugees are women and children.

According to Office of Prime Minister, 205 refugees were granted refugee status and taken to Alere Primary School as 718 were still at the reception Centre in Dzaipi registering and undergoing screening for granting refugees status.
