Message of the Special Representatives of the UN Secretary-General in Burundi, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, and for Central Africa, on World Refugee Day.

Bangui / Bujumbura / Juba / Kinshasa / Libreville – 20 June 2014 – On World Refugee Day 2014, we, the five Special Representatives of the Secretary-General in Central Africa, appeal to end violence in the region and encourage the Governments to tackle the root causes of conflict and displacement.

Violence broke out in Juba on 15 December, and quickly spread to other locations. In the eight weeks since the crisis began, almost 724,000 people have been internally displaced across the country and nearly 145,000 have fled into neighbouring countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda). NGOs and UN agencies need US$1.27 billion to meet the most urgent needs until June including vital pre-positioning of aid supplies needed throughout the year.

The 2000 Ugandan soldiers handover to the Regional Task Force (RTF) of the African Union (AU) in charge of the "elimination" of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) will continue to play their role in this initiative, including those operating in the Central African Republic (CAR), where they have been working in cooperation with national forces to track down the elements of the armed group led by Joseph Kony.

Libreville (Gabon) – 8 février 2013. Le Bureau régional des Nations Unies pour l’Afrique centrale (UNOCA) organise du 11 au 12 février à Entebbe (Ouganda), une réunion d’évaluation et de réflexion sur les priorités à établir dans le cadre de la mise en œuvre de la stratégie régionale de lutte contre l’Armée de résistance du Seigneur (LRA) adoptée en juin 2012 par le Conseil de sécurité. Dans la Déclaration présidentielle du 19 décembre 2012, l’organe exécutif de l’ONU invite en effet le Secrétaire général à lui présenter, d’ici le 28 février, une feuille de route précise dans ce sens.
