I met nine-month-old Abas in Medair’s nutrition clinic in Yusuf Batil camp. He was playing on his mother’s lap, waiting for check-up with the nutrition officer.

Abas’ smile was so contagious. His enthusiasm and the big sparkle in his eyes put a wide smile on all our faces.

Abas’ mother Noti had been bringing him to the nutrition clinic for the past three weeks. He had been diagnosed with moderate acute malnutrition and was receiving a high-protein, high-energy peanut paste that helps children quickly recover from malnutrition, called Plumpy’Sup.

Hot, dry air blows in our faces as soon as the door of the plane opens. We’ve just landed on a small airstrip in an area where famine was recently declared by the UN.

I look around. The soil has deep cracks and the fields look yellow. I don’t see any crops, or even the remains of crops. Due to repeated displacement, people were unable to plant their crops; the few who did plant lost their harvest due to floods.

Lausanne, 21 February 2017 – East Africa, and in particular the Horn of Africa, has been in a state of crisis for a good part of the 21st century. However, the UN’s official announcement yesterday declaring a state of famine in several areas of South Sudan underlines the extreme severity of the humanitarian situation.

Medair has been active in East Africa for the past 23 years, delivering critical and emergency health and nutrition aid to South Sudan and Somalia.

Adeng’s entire family is struggling to stay alive. Her face fills with worry as she tells me how she watched her healthy and lively children weaken, lose weight, and become frail.

Like so many others in this region of South Sudan, Adeng and her family are suffering because droughts and floods have destroyed most of their crops, and food prices at local markets have leapt out of reach. Families are now eating seeds to survive.

Recent violence in Pibor town has led to widespread looting of shops and NGO compounds, destruction of property and mass displacement. Thousands of people have fled to Vertet payam, a remote location that lacks adequate access to life’s basic needs, such as health care, food and clean drinking water. Now, relatively safe from the violence, the displaced and host community are facing other life-threatening challenges.

While fierce conflict and severe food scarcity threaten families in South Sudan, hundreds of displaced people are arriving every day at one overcrowded UN camp in Bentiu, Unity State in search of help. This UN Protection of Civilian camp is now hosting more than 120,000 people—far beyond the site’s intended capacity. Essential services to families like health, nutrition, water, and sanitation are stretched to the breaking point. Medair is working around the clock to save lives.

South Sudan, a country once brimming with hope after its secession from Sudan over four years ago, collapsed into a civil war in December 2013. It has brought the country’s fragile economy to its knees and violence has forced more than 2.6 million people from their homes into camps, the harsh wilderness, or across borders.

So what is it like to flee for your life in a split second? Atrin knows all too well.

Medair was forced to relocate its international staff from Leer where they had been treating more than 1,400 malnourished children in the county and surrounding areas.

Medair is among a number of international humanitarian organisations who have withdrawn international staff from Unity state. Consequently, according to the UN, more than 300,000 people do not currently have full access to life-saving assistance, including food aid and medical services.
