Overview

This weekly bulletin focuses on selected acute public health emergencies occurring in the WHO African Region. The WHO Health Emergencies Programme is currently monitoring 49 events in the region.

This week, three new events have been reported:

  • Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in Mauritania and cholera in Burundi and Chad. This week’s edition also covers key ongoing events, including:

• Cholera in Kenya

• Hepatitis E in Niger

• Floods/mudslide in Sierra Leone

Additional $88.1 million was needed to support the “last mile” of the international response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the United Nations Controller told the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) today as delegates reiterated concern about significant resources spent to support the operation’s high-level staff positions.

HIGHLIGHTS

· There have been 20 206 reported cases of Ebola virus disease, with 7905 reported deaths.

· Reported case incidence is fluctuating in Guinea and decreasing in Liberia, although Liberia reported more cases in the week ending 28 December than in the previous week.

· There are signs that the increase in incidence has slowed in Sierra Leone. However, the west of the country is still experiencing the most intense transmission of all affected countries.

· The United Kingdom has reported its first confirmed case of Ebola.
