The African Development Bank recently convened a meeting of experts and stakeholders in the agricultural sector to design integrated pest and disease management mechanisms for controlling the spread of the Fall Army Worm in East Africa.

The Fall Army Worm or Spodoptera frugiperda is an invasive insect threatening food supplies and incomes of millions of African smallholder farmers. The multi-stakeholder, regional action plans to stop the menace of the worm in Africa falls under the Bank’s Technologies for African Agriculture Transformation (TAAT) agenda.

The Board Directors of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) at its seating on 14th July 2016 approved a grant of Euro 5.9 million from the Transition Support Facility-Trust Fund to improve water supply that would benefit 230,000 people in Juba.

The project aims to improve the livelihoods of people in Juba city through the provision of improved water supply infrastructure. It will also strengthen efficient utility operations, private sector participation and women empowerment.

The African Water Facility (AWF) announced on January 9, 2015 that it has offered a €1.97 million grant to the Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Program (NELSAP) to increase water availability for multiple purposes in the Nyimur region of Uganda and South Sudan. The grant will support the improvement of irrigated agriculture and food production, fisheries, electricity generation and sanitation as well as the prevention of flooding and droughts in the region.

The Government of Rwanda, spearheading an African Union-led initiative, and the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) have signed an agreement aimed at providing at least EUR 50 million (approx. USD 70 million) within an Africa-wide resource mobilization initiative. The initiative will finance improved access to drinking water, sanitation and hygiene in Africa. The agreement was signed on the fringes of the 23rd AU Summit held from 26-27 June 2014 In Malabo (Equatorial Guinea).

The African Development Bank Group has approved a grant for an assessment study of a water supply and sanitation program for 11 small and medium-sized towns in South Sudan.

The USD 5.4 million grant, extended from the Fragile States Facility, will benefit some 170,000 people living in those 11 towns.

On May 4, the African Development Bank approved a €2 million grant from the African Water Facility to finance the development study needed to attract the investments required to implement them. The overall project is supported jointly by the New Partnership for Africa’s Development- Infrastructure Project Preparation Facility (NEPAD-IPPF).
