A year-long program for adolescent girl refugees in Sub-Saharan Africa successfully promoted healthy transitions to adulthood within the evaluation period, according to the results of randomized controlled trials in Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The studies, which appear in BMJ: Global Health, were led by researchers in the Program on Forced Migration and Health at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.

Between January and August 2018, 36,185 refugees arrived in Ethiopia, mostly from South Sudan and Eritrea.

Introduction

Ethiopia has a long standing history of hosting refugees. In 2004, a National Refugee Law was enacted based on the international and regional refugee conventions to which Ethiopia is a party. Currently, the country is host to some 905,800 refugees, the majority from South Sudan (46.6%), Somalia (28.4%), Eritrea (19.2%) and Sudan (4.9%). As conflicts are ongoing in neighbouring countries, refugees continue to enter Ethiopia on a daily basis, making it the second largest refugee-hosting country in Africa.

When Nyantau Machoch and her six children arrived in eastern Ethiopia’s Jewi refugee camp, they were relieved and grateful to receive nutrient-packed biscuits, the first food they had eaten in days. The family had traveled through the bush on foot from their home in war-torn South Sudan, as gunshots rang out around them. They survived on leaves and wild fruits, which filled their stomachs but made them sick.

Addis Ababa, 14 June 2018: The Government of Ireland today announced the disbursement of €1 million to the office of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees in support of its work with refugees in Ethiopia. The money, made available through Irish Aid, Ireland’s official programme for overseas development assistance, will go to supporting the delivery of international protection and critical services to the over 920,000 refugees hosted by Ethiopia.

Surrounded by a region in conflict, Ethiopia is Africa's second largest refugee hosting country, after Uganda. In addition, conflict, drought and flooding causes displacement inside the country. How are these refugees welcomed?

In January 2018, Ethiopia hosts close to 900,000 refugees, and the number is growing. They are mainly from neighbouring South Sudan, Eritrea, Sudan and Somalia. More than 1.5 million people in Ethiopia are internally displaced.

If properly implemented, Ethiopia’s version of the Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework – which combines development and humanitarian aid – will benefit both refugees and host communities.

10,781 South Sudanese refugees have been registered in Ethiopia since the beginning of year.

51 children in Addis Ababa received protection support from the Refugee Outreach Volunteers (ROVs) in February. The ROVs help link UNHCR and partners with the refugees in the city.

ADDIS ABABA – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today announced a contribution of US$6 million from the Government of the People’s Republic of China to assist refugees and people suffering because of drought in the Somali region of Ethiopia.

“The generous contribution from the Government of China will help WFP to support millions of drought-affected people and hundreds of thousands of refugees,” said Samir Wanmali, Acting WFP Country Director in Ethiopia.

COMPASS – an all-girl alliance – is steering refugee girls towards fighting sexual and gender-based violence

The sounds of sweet music and chants fill a section of Bambasi Camp, in Ethiopia’s western Benishangul-Gumuz region. This vast community of over 17,000 Sudanese refugees is home to a group of excited young girls who now sing and clap as they welcome each other to another weekly session of fun-filled learning - the COMPASS sessions.

ADDIS ABABA –The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, are appealing for US$80 million to provide food assistance to refugees in Ethiopia.

The amount of food that refugees receive was cut by 20 percent last year below the 2,100 kilocalories per day required to sustain the average person. UNHCR and WFP are warning of deeper cuts to the amount of food from April unless new funding is received in March.
