Executive Summary

Depriving someone of their freedom is a terrible violation. Modern slavery is a destructive, personal crime and an abuse of human rights. It is a widespread and profitable criminal industry but despite this it is largely invisible, in part because it disproportionately affects the most marginalised. This is why measuring this problem is so crucial in exposing and ultimately resolving it. The information contained within the Global Slavery Index is critical in these efforts.

In June 2018, thousands of people were forced to flee their homes due to hostilities in several parts of the Country. In Central Equatoria, about 20,700 IDPs were reported in Yei town- this follows fighting in several locations in Yei County and nearly 3,100 people were displaced from Kupera to Lainya following harassment and looting by armed elements. In Western Equatoria, some 18,500 IDPs were registered in Tambura; they fled fighting in Nagero, Nagero County.

ECW Annual Results Report: Over 650,000 Children Reached in the Fund’s First Year of Operations

New York, 6 July 2018 – The just-released ECW annual results report shows ECW’s investments have reached more than 650,000 children and youth affected by conflict and natural disasters during the Fund’s first year of operations from April 2017 to March 2018. In total ECW invested US$82 million in 14 crisis-affected countries.

Protection des réfugiés

En date du 26 juin 2018, le HCR en partenariat avec la CNR et JUPEDEC a effectué la distribution des espaces morcelés aux réfugiés sur le camp de réfugiés sud-soudanais d’Obo afin qu’ils puissent y construire des abris. Ces espaces ont été attribués à quarante-six (46) ménages dont treize (13) délocalisés de la trajectoire de l’aérodrome, quinze (15) réfugiés congolais du camp de Zemio qui se sont déplacés à Obo, et huit (8) ménages nouveaux arrivants.

The Responsibility to Protect (R2P) is a global norm, unanimously adopted by heads of state and government at the 2005 UN World Summit, aimed at preventing and halting Genocide, War Crimes, Ethnic Cleansing and Crimes Against Humanity. R2P stipulates that:

  • Every State has the Responsibility to Protect its populations from the four mass atrocity crimes (Pillar I).

  • The wider international community has the responsibility to encourage and assist individual States in meeting that responsibility (Pillar II).
