Key Messages

  • Since mid-July, persistent and well above-average seasonal rains in Sudan caused significant levels of flooding. According to reports, over 45,000 people have been affected in West Kordofan, Kassala, El Gezira, Sennar, and Northern states. Meanwhile, large areas of western Ethiopia, southeastern South Sudan, and northern Uganda have experienced significant rainfall deficits for the past month, resulting in soil and crop moisture stress.

CERF’s 2017 Annual Report, launched today, provides a detailed account of how, during the year, CERF and its partners ensured strategic use of almost $420 million in donor contributions to deliver the highest priority aid, where and when it was need the most.

Renewed violence in the Oromia and SNNP regions of Ethiopia has caused the displacement of over one million Ethiopians, who are now in critical need of humanitarian assistance.

The Government of Ethiopia and humanitarian partners require a total of USD 117.7 million to scale up their response to the most recent round of internal displacement.

UNHCR has received USD 7.5 million from CERF for procurement and distribution of non-food items (NFIs) in regions affected by the recent displacement.

Ethiopia is host to the second largest refugee population in Africa, sheltering over 928,663 registered refugees and asylum seekers as of 31 July 2018.

So far in 2018, 34,509 refugees arrived in Ethiopia, including 2,032 in July. They are mostly from South Sudan and Eritrea.

UNHCR is actively participating in the humanitarian response to the IDP situation in Ethiopia and has deployed two Emergency Response Teams to Gedeo and West Guji. The teams are supporting the authorities with site management and the co-ordination of responses to protection needs.

OVERVIEW

This report compares current humanitarian crises based on their level of humanitarian access. Affected populations in more than 40 countries are not getting proper humanitarian assistance due to access constraints. Out of 44 countries included in the report, nearly half of them are currently facing critical humanitarian access constraints, with four countries (Eritrea, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen) being considered as inaccessible. Moderate humanitarian access constraints are an issue in eight countries, and 15 face low humanitarian access constraints.

Sectarian terrorist attacks increase in Afghanistan

On Friday, 3 August, a gun and bomb attack on a Shia mosque in the city of Gardez left at least 39 people dead, including a number of children. The Gardez mosque attack is the latest in a growing number of terrorist attacks by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant-Khorasan (ISIL-K) against civilians and civilian infrastructure across Afghanistan. Recent targets have included a medical center for midwives, a government refugee assistance office, and a delegation of Sikh and Hindu community leaders.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • At the end of June 2018, there were a total of 22,443 refugees in Addis Ababa, mainly from Eritrea, Yemen, Somalia, South Sudan and refugees of other nationalities, mainly from the Great Lakes region.

  • Of the total population, 859 are children, who arrived alone or were separated from their parents or relatives during flight.

  • Of the 22,443 urban refugees, 17,720 (79%) are Eritrean refugees, majority of whom are beneficiaries of the Government’s Out-Of-Camp Policy.
