South Sudan’s civil war has spread across the country, fueling economic collapse and food shortages, and sending millions of residents fleeing across its borders. Although the former Northern Bahr el-Ghazal State has escaped the worst excesses of the current conflict—in part because it is a supposed heartland of South Sudan’s ruling political military elites—it is also deeply affected by, and embedded in, the current war.

Surrounded by a region in conflict, Ethiopia is Africa's second largest refugee hosting country, after Uganda. In addition, conflict, drought and flooding causes displacement inside the country. How are these refugees welcomed?

In January 2018, Ethiopia hosts close to 900,000 refugees, and the number is growing. They are mainly from neighbouring South Sudan, Eritrea, Sudan and Somalia. More than 1.5 million people in Ethiopia are internally displaced.

Years of conflict, underdevelopment and climatic shock have triggered humanitarian needs in Sudan for more than a decade. A combination of volatile economic conditions, an influx of refugees, mostly from South Sudan, and the continued impact of years of conflict have increased the number of people who need assistance this year. At least 7.1 million people need humanitarian aid, including 2.8 million acutely malnourished children and pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Summary of major revisions made to emergency plan of action:

This update is requesting a no-cost three months extension (new end date: 16 August 2018). This extension will allow the deployment of a DCPRR Delegate from the region and a RDRT to Sudan to support the Sudanese Red Crescent (SRCS) to review humanitarian context and inform operational strategies such as revision of emergency appeal or convert into country operational plan. The emergency appeal operation is currently underfunded (3%) while the needs on the ground remain high.
