DOHA – The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Qatar Development Fund and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding providing US$1 million to address the food crisis arising from the conflict in the Republic of South Sudan, which has led to the deterioration of the humanitarian and health situations, widespread population displacement and disruption of livelihoods since fighting erupted in December 2013.

Meningococcal disease in Sudan: Trend is declining

For the last couple of years, the trend of meningococcal diseases in Sudan is visibly on the decline. Last year, a total of 1,110 suspected cases of meningococcal disease including 49 deaths were reported from Sudan. There was no localized outbreak from meningococcal disease reported from the country last year.

CCHF remains entrenched in Pakistan

In 2013, Pakistan has probably seen one of the worst outbreaks from Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF). As of December 2013, a total of 100 cases were reported across the country including 20 deaths (CFR: 20%). 64 of these cases have been laboratory-confirmed.

Dengue in Pakistan

The dengue fever (DF) outbreak in Khy-ber Pakthunkhwa (KPK) province of Pakistan, reported in weekly epidemiol-ogical monitor (Volume-6, issue-37, dated 15 September 2013), has subsided. This was one of the major outbreaks of den-gue fever reported ever from this prov-ince in the country. As of November 2013, a total of 8,494 laboratory-confirmed cases of DF were reported from this province. As reported earlier, the district of Swat was the most af-fected area in the province.

Yellow fever in Sudan

Between 03 October to 14 December 2013, a total of 49 suspected cases of Yellow fever were reported including 15 deaths (CFR: 30.6%) from the West Kordofan state of Sudan. As reported in the weekly epidemiological monitor, issue no: 45, volume-6, yellow fever was confirmed by serology and neutralization assay on samples retested at the WHO reference laboratory in Dakar, Senegal.

Call for strengthening surveillance for SARI

There has been a renewed call to strengthen surveillance for severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) in the countries of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region. This was the main recommendation of a recently concluded intercountry meeting of the Eastern Mediterranean Acute Respiratory Infection Surveillance Network held at Sharm-El-Shaikh, Egypt from 24-27 November 2013.

November 14, 2012 (KAMPALA) – The “Educate A Child” initiative was launched by Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, the second of the three wives of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar and the UN children’s fund (UNICEF) on Wednesday.

They signed a three-year agreement aimed at working towards the goal of quality primary education for all the world’s children.

May 9, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – A Sudanese official announced on Wednesday that the government has started releasing fund to Darfur Regional Authority (DRA) after its chairman, Tijani el-Sissi, voiced frustration with Khartoum’s slowness in upholding its financial commitments.

The minister of state at the presidency of the republic, Amin Hassan Omer, revealed that a meeting chaired by first Vice-President Ali Osman Mohammed Taha and the finance minister Ali Mahmoud had formed committees to handle arrangements to secure releasing of fund owed by the government to the DRA as scheduled.
