ACTED supports 24 spontaneous settlements in Nugaal Region through provision of Camp Management Services, including coordination and information management, community participation, site maintenance and communication with communities activities. On a monthly basis ACTED conducts service delivery monitoring data collection through site observations and key informant interviews. Data are circulated with partners and summarized in an interactive dashboard and sites snapshot.

Highlights

• The Uganda Ministry of Health and partners have intensified preparedness and response interventions following a confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease in Tchomia health zone, near Lake Albert where the Democratic Republic of the Congo borders with Uganda.

• Over 2,200 reports and questions on Ebola were received via SMS from U-Reporters. Most U-Reporters confirmed that they had heard about Ebola through radio, television, community awareness campaigns and posters.

Ethiopia is host to the second largest refugee population in Africa, sheltering 905,831 registered refugees and asylum seekers as of 31 August 2018.

Between January and August 2018, 36,185 refugees arrived in Ethiopia, mostly from South Sudan and Eritrea.

UNHCR delivers lifesaving assistance to respond to the increased Eritrean influx following the reopening of the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Ethiopia is experiencing an increase in the number of internally displaced people. In total, over 2.8 million people in Ethiopia are currently internally displaced.

UNHCR enhances registration data and has frozen refugee figures as of 31 August 2018.
Hence all figures in this Operation Update are as of August 2018.

The UN Refugee Agency has been working in Ukraine since 1994 and established a country office the following year. A host country agreement was signed in September 1996.

Ukraine acceded to the 1951 Convention relating to the status of refugees and the 1967 Protocol in 2002. A 2011 law regulates the treatment of refugees and other persons of concern in Ukraine.

In 2013, Ukraine acceded to the two UN Conventions relating to the status of stateless persons (1954) and on the reduction of statelessness (1961).

Athens – From 1 July through 5 October IOM, the UN Migration Agency, provided safe accommodation to 2,272 vulnerable migrants and refugees who were transferred from the North-eastern Aegean islands to mainland facilities by the Greek government. Some 889 children, 393 girls and 496 boys were among those relocated from the islands in efforts to ease the strain on island capacity and hardship for these groups.

Despite increasing hostilities and access challenges, UNHCR continued to provide life-saving assistance to refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced persons during the first half of 2018.

Protection and shelter needs of IDP families have increased. In 2018, UNHCR has so far assisted over 608,000 IDPs, of whom some 100,000 were reached during the Al Hudaydah response.

UNHCR-assisted spontaneous return for Somali refugees in Yemen to Somalia continued in 2018, bringing the total number of Somalis voluntarily returning to 2,270 persons.

Based on figures from UNHCR’s Protection and Return Monitoring Network (PRMN), the second half of 2018 has witnessed a decline in the number of internally displaced people in Somalia compared to the first six months of the year. At the height of the displacement in April, 248,000 people were forced to flee.

MIGRANT BASELINE

The 21th round of data collection took place in July and August 2018. During this round a revised version of the data collection methodology was used to capture additional information on the needs and challenges migrants are facing.

DTM identified there to be at least 669,176 migrants in Libya. Migrants were identified in all baladiyas, within 554 communities and originated from more than 41 countries.
