Current Situation

In 2015 Africa experienced its worst drought in 60 years. The unusually strong El Niño weather pattern in 2015-2016, coupled with record-high temperatures, had a catastrophic effect on crops, vegetation, livestock, and water resources. Unfortunately, the drought has continued into 2017 due to lack of significant rainfall.

In addition to the drought, armed conflict, and economic decline has further exacerbated the problem for some countries.

SILVER SPRING, Md. - Four months have passed since famine was first declared in Somalia. As the pictures coming out of the drought-stricken country show, the situation is distressing and aid remains desperately needed to avert human catastrophe. According to the United Nations, more than four million Somalis are living in famine zones, with 750,000 at risk of starvation over the next few months. The lingering drought has been made worse by decades of war, high food prices, and local militants blocking foreign aid to those who need it most.

As NGOs who have worked in Somalia for decades, we are accustomed to the daily struggle to survive that is the reality for most Somalis. However, never before have we faced such acute suffering with so many lives at stake. Somalia is at a turning point. The next three months are critical; hundreds of thousands of lives hang in the balance. Efforts to increase assistance and prevent more deaths will not be enough unless accompanied by a dramatic change in approach. The humanitarian imperative of saving lives must override any political considerations at this crucial time.

SILVER SPRING, Md. - The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is running an energy and livelihood project that aims to increase access to renewable energy sources and reduce poverty for hundreds of thousands of impoverished individuals within the states of Puntland and Somaliland in northern Somalia.

The Somalia Energy and Livelihoods Project (SELP) is based on a joint needs assessment that was conducted by ADRA in 2005. The assessment revealed that more than 95 percent of Somalia's low-income population has no access to electricity.
