November rainfall deficits raise concerns in parts of East Africa

30 Nov 2009 description

- Current food insecurity in the East Africa region is concentrated in the lowland pastoral and marginal cropping areas of the region (mostly in Somalia, Kenya, and southeastern Ethiopia), where the bulk of the 17 million highly or extremely food insecure population is found (Figure 1).

31 Oct 2009 description

- About 17 million people in the East Africa region are food insecure (Figure 1) and are in need of emergency humanitarian assistance. This is mainly due to the cumulative effects of poor rainfall/droughts in pastoral and marginal cropping areas in the eastern sector of the region, civil insecurity/conflict and consequent population displacement and disruption to markets, and high food prices.

21 Oct 2009 description
  • The 2009 deyr rains began in late September in most key pastoral areas in the north, northeast, and central regions, indicating an early onset of the much-needed 2009 deyr rainy season. Well-distributed rains have continued into early October in most drought-affected regions including Mudug, Togdheer, Nugaal, Sool, and Sanaag.

    - In the most likely scenario normal to above-normal rains between October and December, due to the El Niño event, could end the prolonged drought and improve water and pasture availability.
