As of 31st December 2016, Kakuma Refugee camp population stands at 154,947 with 37,813 from Somalia, 84,983 from South Sudan, 9,078 from Sudan, 1,159 from Uganda, 505 from Rwanda, 5,366 from Ethiopia, 55 from Eritrea, 9,753Congo(DRC) , 39 from COB, 6,164 from Burundi and 22 from Tanzania.

NAIROBI, Kenya – At the invitation of H.E. Ambassador (Dr) Amina Mohamed, Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kenya, the Tripartite Commission for the Voluntary Repatriation of Somali Refugees living in Kenya met in Nairobi on 25 June 2016 to discuss the modalities of the repatriation process of Somali refugees to Somalia in the context of the Government of Kenya’s decision to close the Dadaab camps.

For reasons of national security, against a pervasive and persistent terrorist threat, Kenya is to close its two largest refugee camps in Dadaab and Kakuma. Between them, they house more than 600,000 refugees.

As some of the largest camps in the world, they have acquired iconic status. They represent decades of an open-hearted Kenyan response to those fleeing wars and persecution in our sub-region.

  • Kenya has completed 4 months with no new case of polio reported in the current outbreak. Total number of confirmed cases of WPV type-1 to date remains at 14. Date of onset of paralysis of the last polio case is 14 July 2013.

  • Somalia a total case count of 183. Date of onset of the last case is 9 October 2013.

  • Ethiopia reported no new case during the past week. The country’s total case count remains at 6, with the date of onset of last case of 19 September.

President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House Nairobi last evening met and held talks with President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud of Somalia who paid him a courtesy call.

During the meeting also attended by Deputy President William Ruto, President Uhuru assured the Somali President that Kenya will continue to work with his country’s leadership to consolidate peace and security in the country.

President Mwai Kibaki has called on United Nations agencies and international organisations working in Somalia to relocate to the liberated areas and directly provide humanitarian assistance to Somalis living there.

The President also appealed to the UN Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon to mobilize all relevant agencies to embark on relocating the refugees living in Kenya to liberated areas of Somalia noting that the situation created by the presence of over 65,000 refugees in Daadab Camp in Kenya was untenable.
