November 11, 2015 (ADDIS ABABA) –Ethiopia’s refugee agency has launched an urgent appeal for food aid to assist hundreds of thousands of refugees particularly South Sudanese refugees.

Administration for Refugee and Returnee Affairs (ARRA), a local implementing partner of UNHCR has called for supplies of food for over 730,000 refugees from South Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea and Sudan who are being sheltered at different camps in Ethiopia.

September 26, 2015 (KHARTOUM) - An Egyptian security official Saturday said the authorities rescued 174 illegal immigrants, mostly Sudanese as they were heading to Europe on a boat, 47 nautical miles north west of Mersa Matruh.

Egypt’s al-Youm al-Sabi’i daily newspaper quoted the director of security in Mersa Matruh, Maj. Gen. Hashim Lutfi, as saying that the rescued immigrants include 23 Egyptians and 151 from nine other countries.

January 11, 2014 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s Refugees Commission declared that the country is home to 91,500 refugees who are located mainly in the east and border regions with countries experiencing conflict.

The deputy commissioner for refugees Abdullah Suleiman Mohammed told the government-sponsored Sudanese Media Centre (SMC) website that the refugees who are receiving direct support from the government are estimated to be around 75,700 who are present in nine camps.

December 13, 2013 (ADDIS ABABA) - The United Nations refugee agency said on Friday that it is planning to resettle over 3,800 refugees in Ethiopia to a third country.

This follows record submissions for resettlement at the Tongo, Barahle and Bokolmanyo refugee camps, where resettlement has not not been previously conducted.

February 1, 2013 (ADDIS ABABA) – The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said on Friday that they will be working to stabilise the emergency phase of its response to the Sudanese and Somali refugee influxes in Ethiopia this year.

“UNHCR will improve conditions in the camps and will make the transition from emergency responses to more sustainable activities, thereby also reducing costs and encouraging self-reliance” UNHCR representative in Ethiopia, Kisut Gebregzabhir, told Sudan Tribune.

June 15, 2012 (JUBA) — Alarmed by the high rate of conflict among its communities, various stakeholders in South Sudan on Tuesday resolved to develop a conflict early warning and early response strategy, widely seen as a mechanism for monitoring, information sharing and conflict prevention.

The adoption of the seven-year strategy (2012-2019) follows a decision taken by the high level technical policy organs of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development’s (IGAD) Conflict Early Warming and Response Mechanism (CEWARN), which was established in 2002.

September 24, 2010 (ADDIS ABABA) - Band Aid Charitable Trust donated a grant of US$86,000 to assist tens of thousands of mainly and Sudanese and Somalis refugees currently residing in a semi-arid region of eastern Ethiopia, said the UN refugee Agency.

In May this year, the Horn of Africa's nation said that it is expecting an additional 25,000 Somali refugees fleeing fighting in their homeland, to cross Ethiopia's south-eastern border by the end of the year and appealed for $13 million dollars to support the rising refugee population.

April 26, 2010 (ADDIS ABABA) - Ethiopia said today the figure of Sudanese refugees seeking to return home has seen an increase after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

January 18, 2010 (KHARTOUM) - Around one hundred refugees from Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia infiltrate Sudan every day through the eastern border, said a Sudanese official on Sunday.

Last month the Africa Bureau Director of the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) said East African refugees are flocking into eastern Sudan at the rate of 1,800 each month.

Eastern Sudan is one of the oldest refugee situations in UNHCR's history.
