1. Introduction

Polish Humanitarian Action in collaboration with other humanitarian actors from Middle Shabelle - WOCCA, Aid Vision and SHARDO conducted an initial rapid need assessment at villages in Balcad district recently affected by floods; to understand flood impact, assess the existing affected communities’ capacity and give recommendation on the immediate humanitarian response aimed to support communities needs and to avert further loss of communal assets and lives.

INTRODUCTION

In these five Districts of M/Shabelle Region namely: Warsheik, Adale, Aden Yabaal, Mahaday and Balad the Sanitation and Hygiene conditions were very poor after the collapse of previous regime. People have inadequate of access getting of safe drinking water, people are eating contaminated food.

As result of these conditions many people died, malnourished and got sick especially marginalized women and children and Aged people who can not cope the effects of poor sanitation and hygiene.

Introduction

Since Somali Government had been over thrown in 1990 most of the civil services had been destroyed by the endless war and civil atrocity existing in Somalia, the economy economic of Somalia depends on several main sectors as Farming, fishing, domestication animal and small business entrepreneurship and Diaspora remittance.

Eventually infrastructures assisting these sectors to survive were destroyed resulting wide spread poverty, lack of education, severe Human rights violation and poor living condition among Somali communities.

3. Introduction:

Middle Shabelle is located in the south central zone of Somalia

The region borders: Galgadud to the north, Hiran to the West, Lower Shabelle and Banadir regions to the south and the Indian Ocean to the east.

A pre - war census estimated the population at 1.4 million and today the regional council claims that the region's population is 1.6 million.

In March 15 of 2006, SHARDO and Middle Shabelle Emergency Drought Committee have again carried out a reassessment on the drought-hit areas of Adale & Warsheik districts of Middle Shabelle region of Somalia.

The visited locations were 6 villages of Adale district and 18 villages of Warsheik district who are in severe drought that caused loss of animals and starvation of thousands of people.

The shortage of normal rains for the last 3 years and scarcity of grazing for the animals caused this drought and people are starving and are going to die because of hunger.
