Traditional elder Adan Muse Hassan’s day started with optimism on October 14th of 2017. He predicted another rewarding day, as he carried out the challenging task of resolving disputes and encouraging reconciliation, within the capital Mogadishu.
The sunny morning coupled with the gentle breeze from the imposing waters of the Indian Ocean, was the perfect weather he had hoped for, to enable him carry out his tasks.
Mogadishu, 11 October 2018 - A daylong meeting of the Federal Government of Somalia, the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), the UN and other key stakeholders, was convened on Wednesday, to review progress made in the security sector, under the Comprehensive Approach to Security (CAS).
Mogadishu, 3 October 2018 - The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and key international partners have concluded a meeting in Mogadishu, convened to devise ways of reducing the threat posed by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in Somalia.
The meeting, a follow-up to a similar one held in April 2018, deliberated on specific threats, the dynamism of the threats; and explored ways of bolstering efforts to reduce them.
Mogadishu, 28 September 2018 – The African Union’s deputy Special Representative for Somalia Mr. Simon Mulongo has underscored the important role Sierra Leone is playing, in support of peace operations in the African continent.
Mr. Mulongo was speaking in his office today, at a meeting with the visiting Sierra Leonean Police Director of Peace and Support Operations, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Gloria Tarawally.
Mogadishu, 9 September 2018 – The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) have pledged to strengthen their collaboration to effectively counter the threat posed by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) to the country’s stability.
The pledge was made on Tuesday at a meeting between the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia Ambassador Francisco Madeira and the new Head of UNMAS Somalia, Qurat-ul-Ain Sadozai.
Mogadishu, 3 September 2018- The Special Representative of the African Union Commission Chairperson (SRCC) for Somalia, Ambassador Francisco Madeira, condemns the heinous attack by Al-Shabaab terrorists on a residential area in Hawlwadaag district, on Sunday, which led to the death of civilians, among them children.
The attack also caused extensive damage to Hawlwadaag district headquarters and nearby buildings including a mosque and a school.
Mogadishu, 20 August 2018 - The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), is training youths to partner with security institutions to deter crime and put a check on violent extremism in Somalia. AMISOM Police working in collaboration with the Somali security forces, the Federal Government and the Federal Member States, is holding of a series of sensitization workshops and engagements across the country, to encourage such partnerships.
Mogadishu, 13 June 2018 – The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Somali National Army(SNA), Maj. Gen. Abdiweli Jama Hussein ‘Gorod’, has instructed his troops to ensure compliance with the International Humanitarian Law, when conducting military operations in the country.
Nairobi, 10 August 2018 – Somalia’s electoral stakeholders have concluded a four-day highly engaging workshop on electoral processes and boundaries delimitation.
The capacity building workshop is the third in a series of electoral seminars that have been convened for the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) and stakeholders, by the Addis Ababa based African Union Commission and the AU Mission in Somalia.
Mogadishu – UK State Secretary for Defence Rt. Hon. Gavin Williamson has lauded the progress made on the security front in Somalia, but cautioned that the premature exit of the AU troops from the Horn of Africa country, could have an adverse effect on gains already made.
The Defence Secretary said the UK government was keen to ensure the exit of AMISOM from Somalia is not undertaken, until the latter is fully capable of handling the national security responsibility.
Mogadishu, 30 July 2018 - A delegation of officials of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC), is on a two-day working visit to Somalia to solicit the support of Somali authorities in the ratification of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
The visiting delegation is led by the ACERWC Vice-president Ms. Marie Christine Bocoum, who is also the AU Special Rapporteur on Ending Child Marriage.
Somalia’s civil war wrenched the country in many ways.
Families were torn apart, the rule of law faded away, government institutions collapsed, and education came to a standstill, to name but a few of the setbacks the country faced because of the violence.
In the ensuing decades after the war’s end, the area of education slowly regained some structure as the authorities – aware of its importance for the country’s long-term development – tried to get it back on track.
Brussels, 19 July 2018 - The two-day High-Level Partnership Forum on Somalia held in Brussels concluded on Wednesday with the representatives of 58 countries and six international organizations acknowledging that the horn of Africa country is on the right path to recovery despite the major challenges it continues to face.
Mogadishu, 10 July 2018 – The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and the United Nations have reiterated their commitment to help develop capacity of the Somali national security forces to address all forms of human rights violations.
The two organizations promised to continue mobilizing resources and providing specialized training to the Somali national security forces, during the transition period, to prepare the officers for the handover of security responsibility as per the UN Security Council resolution (2372) adopted last year.
Belet Weyne, 30 June 2018 – The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has embarked on a seven-day training for Somali Police officers on sexual and gender-based violence.
The workshop, being held in Belet Weyne, the headquarters of Hiran region, has attracted 25 police officers from different departments including the community policing unit.
Mogadishu, 24 June 2018 – African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) is taking concrete steps to tackle Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in Somalia.
The Mission’s gender unit plans to train additional Somali police officers to help fight increased cases of sexual violence against women.
The Reforms, Restructuring and Development Coordinator with AMISOM Mr. Maxwell Chikunguru, said the Mission is also encouraging gender mainstreaming in all government structures.
Friday, 22 June 2018 – A three-day workshop organized by African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) to foster strong working relationship between police officers and community members has concluded in Baidoa, the administrative capital of South West state.
The workshop, which commenced on Tuesday, sought to enhance collaboration between the police and local residents through community policing to help promote peace and security in neighbourhoods.

SOMALIA: As the world commemorates the International Day of the African Child in memory of the 1976 Soweto Uprisings, the children of Somalia stand in solidarity with other African children, under this year’s theme Leave No Child Behind for Africa’s Development.
Mogadishu, 7 June 2018 -The Commander of the British Forces in Somalia Col. Richard Maundrell today handed over 30-night vision goggles and 600 protective glasses to the African Union Mission in Somalia, to support night activities on the frontline.
The equipment, received by the Deputy Head of Mission Mr. Simon Mulongo and the Deputy Force Commander Maj. Gen Charles Tai Gituai, will be used for visual protection especially during clearing works along Main Supply Routes and for enhancing security around the Forward Operating Bases.
Kismayo, 5 June 2018 – A visiting delegation from the African Union (AU) headquarters left Somalia today, after a three-day assessment tour of AU funded community projects in the country.
The team evaluated Quick Impact Projects in the capital Mogadishu and in Kismayo, the administrative capital of Jubbaland state, to assess their impact on beneficiary households.
