Mogadishu, 2 January 2019, The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia, Ambassador Francisco Madeira, has condemned yesterday’s mortar attack on AMISOM Basecamp in Mogadishu, Somalia. “The attack is another proof that the militants have no regard for the sanctity of human life. They insist on scuttling the progress so far achieved in restoring peace and security in the country,” said Ambassador Francisco Madeira.
Mogadishu, 22 December 2018 – The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has strongly condemned the simultaneous bomb attacks, which occurred last night and today morning in Mogadishu.
The three attacks by Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIED) targeted civilians and security forces, in the busy central business district, causing fatalities.
“These senseless, heinous attacks by Al-Shabaab will not change the course of progress happening in Somalia,” Ambassador Madeira, the AU Special Representative for Somalia said.

Mogadishu, 04 December 2018 – As part of initiatives to boost security in the regional states, the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), on Monday handed over a newly constructed police station in the Farjano district within Kismayo town, to Jubbaland State authorities.
KAMPALA – A group of Somali leaders have benefitted from an intensive five-day leadership skills development course, aimed at improving their competencies in leadership.
The course, held at the National Farmers Leadership Centre in Mpigi district, in Uganda, familiarized the participants who are members of the Somali National Commission on Mobilization and Sensitization – a statutory agency mandated to mobilize Somali publics to support state programmes and institutions – with the principle aspects of leadership, needed to carry out their duties.
Nairobi, 4 November 2018 - The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has developed a document that will provide an effective framework for the gradual transition of security responsibilities to Somalia’s security institutions.
Nairobi, 30 October 2018 – The African Union Mission in Somalia, (AMISOM) is holding a crucial meeting with key stakeholders, to develop its Concept of Operations (CONOPS), which will provide an effective framework for implementation of the gradual transition from Somalia.
The five-day meeting in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, will develop a three-year transition plan of action, that takes into consideration the evolving political and security situation in the Horn of Africa country.
Mogadishu, 19 October 2018 – Officers from the Africa Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and Somali national security forces have completed a five-day training on the importance of civil-military cooperation in peace support operations.
The training, organized to enhance participants’ knowledge on civil-military cooperation (CIMIC) and peacekeeping, was attended by officers from the contingents of Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda as well as those from the Somali National Army (SNA), Danab Special Forces and National Intelligence Security Agency (NISA).
Mogadishu, 17 October 2018 – Somalia is in the process of developing a national communication strategy, to stem the tide in radicalization and violent extremism in the Horn of Africa country.
The process of developing the strategy is being spearheaded by the Office of the Prime Minister and is expected to be completed this October.
Jowhar, 16 October 2018 – Water scarcity is now a thing of the past to over twenty-seven thousand people in eight villages in Jowhar, in Middle Shabelle region – beneficiaries of sixteen new shallow wells, implemented by the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
The wells, handed over to the local Administration of HirShabelle state on Monday by the AU Special Representative for Somalia, Ambassador Francisco Caetano Madeira, were constructed with funding from the government of Kazakhstan.
Traditional elder Adan Muse Hassan’s day started with optimism on October 14th of 2017. He predicted another rewarding day, as he carried out the challenging task of resolving disputes and encouraging reconciliation, within the capital Mogadishu.

Mogadishu, 3 October 2018 - The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and key international partners have concluded a meeting in Mogadishu, convened to devise ways of reducing the threat posed by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in Somalia.
The meeting, a follow-up to a similar one held in April 2018, deliberated on specific threats, the dynamism of the threats; and explored ways of bolstering efforts to reduce them.
Mogadishu, 28 September 2018 – The African Union’s deputy Special Representative for Somalia Mr. Simon Mulongo has underscored the important role Sierra Leone is playing, in support of peace operations in the African continent.
Mr. Mulongo was speaking in his office today, at a meeting with the visiting Sierra Leonean Police Director of Peace and Support Operations, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Gloria Tarawally.
Mogadishu, 9 September 2018 – The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) have pledged to strengthen their collaboration to effectively counter the threat posed by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) to the country’s stability.
The pledge was made on Tuesday at a meeting between the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia Ambassador Francisco Madeira and the new Head of UNMAS Somalia, Qurat-ul-Ain Sadozai.
Mogadishu, 3 September 2018- The Special Representative of the African Union Commission Chairperson (SRCC) for Somalia, Ambassador Francisco Madeira, condemns the heinous attack by Al-Shabaab terrorists on a residential area in Hawlwadaag district, on Sunday, which led to the death of civilians, among them children.
The attack also caused extensive damage to Hawlwadaag district headquarters and nearby buildings including a mosque and a school.
Mogadishu, 20 August 2018 - The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), is training youths to partner with security institutions to deter crime and put a check on violent extremism in Somalia. AMISOM Police working in collaboration with the Somali security forces, the Federal Government and the Federal Member States, is holding of a series of sensitization workshops and engagements across the country, to encourage such partnerships.
Mogadishu, 13 June 2018 – The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Somali National Army(SNA), Maj. Gen. Abdiweli Jama Hussein ‘Gorod’, has instructed his troops to ensure compliance with the International Humanitarian Law, when conducting military operations in the country.
Nairobi, 10 August 2018 – Somalia’s electoral stakeholders have concluded a four-day highly engaging workshop on electoral processes and boundaries delimitation.
The capacity building workshop is the third in a series of electoral seminars that have been convened for the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) and stakeholders, by the Addis Ababa based African Union Commission and the AU Mission in Somalia.
Mogadishu – UK State Secretary for Defence Rt. Hon. Gavin Williamson has lauded the progress made on the security front in Somalia, but cautioned that the premature exit of the AU troops from the Horn of Africa country, could have an adverse effect on gains already made.
The Defence Secretary said the UK government was keen to ensure the exit of AMISOM from Somalia is not undertaken, until the latter is fully capable of handling the national security responsibility.
