GENEVA (28 September 2018) - The Human Rights Council this afternoon adopted eight texts in which it extended the mandates of the Group of Eminent Experts on Yemen, of the Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in the Central African Republic, of the Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in Sudan, and of the Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in Somalia.

GENEVA (26 September 2018) - The Human Rights Council this afternoon continued to discuss its technical assistance and capacity building agenda item and held separate interactive dialogues with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia, the Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in Somalia, and with the Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in Sudan.

The United Nations Human Rights Council will hold its thirty-ninth regular session from 10 to 28 September 2018 in the Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Room at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

At the opening of the session at 9 a.m. on Monday, 10 September, the Council will hear an update on the situation of human rights worldwide and on the activities of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights by Michelle Bachelet, the newly appointed United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The Human Rights Council this afternoon heard statements from dignitaries of 11 countries and two organizations and closed the second day of its high-level segment.

Edward Nalbandian, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Armenia, said Armenia continued to implement the national plan of action for human rights protection, had a good record of submission of national and follow-up reports to the treaty bodies, and would submit the Universal Periodic Review second mid-term report on a voluntary basis.

This is the first attempt by UNSOM to quantify casualties and assess the toll of the conflict on civilians covering the period between 1 January 2016 and 14 October 2017. During this period, ground and air attacks inflicted heavy casualties, caused damage to public and private infrastructure, and loss of livestock and impeded access to humanitarian relief for civilians in need.

A total of 4,585 civilian casualties were recorded

NEW YORK (23 October 2017) – The tragic reality of famine around the world has revealed that many States are failing to uphold their legal responsibilities, the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Hilal Elver, told the UN General Assembly in New York today.

She also called for an urgent shift in thinking away from crisis reactions and toward famine prevention.

The Human Rights Council during its midday meeting held an interactive dialogue with the Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in Somalia and an interactive dialogue on the oral update of the High Commissioner for Human Rights on the situation of human rights in Libya. The President of the Central African Republic also addressed the Council.

Yemen: An “entirely man-made catastrophe” – UN human rights report urges international investigation

GENEVA (5 September 2017) – Human rights violations and abuses continue unabated in Yemen, along with unrelenting violations of international humanitarian law, with civilians suffering deeply the consequences of an “entirely man-made catastrophe”, according to a UN human rights report published on Tuesday.
