Improving the Academic Performance and Nutrition of Children in Gaza

From October 2009 to June 2010, Mercy-USA for Aid and Development is partnering with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to provide daily school lunches/snacks to approximately 6,200 children attending 8 elementary and preparatory schools in Gaza.

Health Improvement

Severe flooding in southern Somalia has left over 500,000 persons homeless and at serious risk from malnutrition and disease, especially children and the elderly. Mercy-USA for Aid and Development (M-USA) is providing immediate relief to those affected.

Background

The floods, which began in late October, have seriously increased the food insecurity caused by a severe drought earlier this year. In many areas, the ground was so dry that it could not absorb the rainwater.

From August to November, Mercy-USA for Aid and Development (MUSA) mobile vaccination teams, with the support of UNICEF, inoculated 5,200 children under five and 6,750 pregnant women in the Jilib District. These women and children were inoculated against measles, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio and tuberculosis. When needed, they also received vitamin A, iron tablets and oral rehydration salt (ORS).

Mercy-USA has played a major role in controlling the outbreak of cholera in Jilib during this spring season. Mercy-USA and MSF-Spain jointly opened a cholera treatment center in the area. Mercy-USA provides this center with health staff from our MCH. In addition, we are chlorinating water sources in the region. UNICEF is providing us with the chlorine and oral rehydration salt (ORS) and WHO with intravenous (IV) solution.
