Clean and safe drinking water is so common in the developed world, that most people take it for granted. However for a majority of those who live in rural Somalia and Ethiopia, clean water is a luxury that is hard to come by.

This is a problem not only for villagers and nomads, but also for their cattle, which are relied upon for milk, meat, and trade.

In an effort to make water more accessible to people in the Horn of Africa, Life for Relief and Development commissioned the digging of several new water wells.

The Banadir region of Somalia has arguably been the worst affected by continued violence in the country. A large number of displaced families remain out of their homes indefinitely with little means of meeting their own needs for survival.

In an effort to alleviate the suffering of families in Banadir, LIFE for Relief and Development launched a project to distribute food to poor families, including those caring for orphans and the elderly.

Afghanistan

In Kabul, Laghman, and Nangahar, 763 families received packages of fresh Udhiyah meat.

Iraq

Over 10,000 pounds of fresh meat was distributed to 2,300 poor Iraqi families, as well as a number of orphans, in the provinces of Baghdad, Anbar, Diyala, and Mosul.

Jordan

Udhiyah meat was distributed to 580 families living in Palestinian refugee camps and isolated rural villages.

Lebanon

In the governorates of Tripoli and Sidon LIFE distributed Udhiyah meat to 130 needy families.

In the spring of 2008, LIFE for Relief and Development launched a campaign to help fight extreme hunger and poverty in the Horn of Africa. At the time, world bodies warned that 12 million people in the region were in need of food assistance. In Somalia alone, 300,000 people were identified as needing life-saving food intervention to avoid death from starvation.

ETHIOPIA

In the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa, 232 families with orphaned children were provided food baskets, just in time for Eid-ul-Fitr. This project was completed in cooperation with American Relief Agency for the Horn of Africa (ARAHA).

PALESTINE

In the Gaza Strip, where things continue to go from bad to worse in one of the world's most densely populated areas, LIFE was able to provide food baskets to 500 families.

For the past two decades Somalia has been devastated by civil war, foreign invasion, and natural disasters. This country of 8.2 million people has been without a functioning government for the past 16 years. During this period, hunger and violence has forced approximately 464,000 into refugee camps in neighboring countries.

Additionally, upwards of 1,000,000 Somalis have become internally displaced persons (IDPs), i.e. they fled their homes to live in other parts of Somalia.

Severe droughts in the Horn of Africa have left millions of people on the brink of starvation. An estimated 11 million people in Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, and Djibouti are in need of immediate assistance.

"I lost one of my children two weeks ago" says Fadmo Muhammad to a BBC reporter in the Somali region of Ethiopia. "She died of diarrhea because she was malnourished. We have almost no food. Only donated wheat and a little oil but no milk. I am very frightened that my two other children will die as well. They are both sick"
