Highlights

-The Uganda Ministry of Health and partners have intensified preparedness and response interventions following a confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease in Tchomia health zone, near Lake Albert where the Democratic Republic of the Congo borders with Uganda.

  • Over 2,200 reports and questions on Ebola were received via SMS from U-Reporters. Most U-Reporters confirmed that they had heard about Ebola through radio, television, community awareness campaigns and posters.

Situation update

  • Somalia continues to respond to concurrent outbreaks of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 and type 3.

  • One new cVDPV type 2 case was confirmed this week. Virus was isolated from a contact of child that developed paralysis on the 02 September 2018. These children are both from an inaccessible area of Lower Juba. Detailed investigations are underway to determine the best response mechanism. No type 3 cases have been reported this week.

Highlights

10 out of the 21 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa Region (ESAR) have reported more than 34,109 cholera / AWD cases and 412 deaths (Case Fatality Rate, 1.2%), since the beginning of 2018. These countries include; Angola, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe accounts for 25.7 % of the total case load reported this year, followed by Somalia at 17.9%.

Situation update

  • Somalia continues to experience two simultaneous outbreaks of cVDPV, with signs of ongoing transmission of both cVDPV2 and cVDPV3.

  • This week, three new cases of cVDPV3 have been confirmed. Two cases were reported from Kismayo district, Lower Juba region and one case was reported from Mahaday district, Middle Shabelle region. The most recent case, from Kismayo district, had a date of onset of paralysis on 27 July 2018.

Highlights
- The humanitarian situation in Somalia remains critical due to ongoing impacts of drought, displacement and conflict. As per the FSNAUFEWSNET 2018 Post Gu findings, 4.6 million people are still in need of urgent assistance, including an estimated 2.5 million children. While food security is overall improving, the nutrition situation remains critical with more than 954,000 children under-5 expected to be malnourished over the coming twelve months, including 173,000 severely so.

How children have become frontline targets in armed conflicts.

From widespread killing, maiming, abduction and sexual violence to recruitment into armed groups and strikes on schools and hospitals, as well as essential water facilities – children living in conflict zones around the world continue to come under attack at a shocking scale.

Today, one in four children live in a country affected by conflict or disaster, and 2017 saw a large increase in the number of documented violations against children in these areas.

  • No new cases of cVDPV2 or cVDPV3 have been confirmed this week. The last reported case in this outbreak was cVDPV2, from Fanole IDP camp in Kismayo district, Lower Juba region with a date of onset of paralysis on 30 July 2018.

  • The total number of cVDPV cases remains seven (7): four cVDPV2, two cVDPV3 and one case with a coinfection of cVDPV2 and cVDPV3.

Situation update

 No new isolates of cVDPV2 or cVDPV3 from human or environmental samples have been reported this week.

  • The total number of cases is five: two cVDPV2, two cases of cVDPV3 and one case with a co-infection of cVDPV2 and cVDPV3.

  • A total of 10 cVDPV2 positive samples and seven cVDPV3 positive samples have been detected in five operational environmental sampling sites in the Banadir region, the latest of which became operational in the past week.
