The Water Price Monitoring assessment aims to establish a data collection, monitoring and reporting system on water market prices in order to allow humanitarian and development actors to better analyse humanitarian needs in areas particularly affected by drought.

Situation Update

  • No new cases of cVDPV type 2 or type 3 have been reported from Somalia this week. The total number of cases remains 12: five cVDPV2 cases, six cVDPV3 cases, and one case with cVDPV2 and cVDPV3 co-infection.

  • No new environmental positive samples have been reported this week. The total number of cVDPV environmental isolates for 2018 to date is 31: 19 isolates of cVDPV2, 12 isolates of cVDPV3.

Situation update

  • No new human cases reported from Somalia this week. The total number of cases remains 12: five cVDPV2 cases, six cVDPV3 cases, and one case with cVDPV2 and cVDPV3 co-infection.

  • One new environmental cVDPV2 isolate was reported this week from the 21 October environmental site in Mogadishu. Date of collection was 11 October 2018. This brings the total number of positive environmental isolates for both cVDPV2 and cVDPV3 in Somalia this year to 32.

Highlights

10 out of the 21 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa Region (ESAR) have reported more than 36,820 cholera / AWD cases and 433 deaths (Case Fatality Rate, 1.2%), since the beginning of 2018.

These countries include; Angola, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe accounts for 28.6 % (10,529) of the total case load reported this year, followed by Somalia at 17% (6,273).

Eastern and Southern Africa is home to more than 60 per cent of children and adolescents living with HIV. This is the region where most progress in the HIV response has been made. Coverage of maternal antiretroviral treatment for pregnant and breastfeeding women living with HIV reached 93 per cent in this region in 2017. Sustaining these gains and continuing to reach children, adolescents and women at risk and living with HIV is critical. In 2017, an estimated 120,000 adolescents aged 10–19 years and 94,000 children aged 0–9 years were newly infected with HIV.

Highlights

• An estimated 177,174 children with life threatening severe acute malnutrition (SAM) were treated from January to October 2018. The children reached represent 102 per cent of the overall UNICEF 2018 planning target of 173,000 SAM children.

• A UNICEF-supported inter-agency assessment found 102 children, all boys, reported to be associated with the Puntland forces in Tukaraq military base, in need of further screening and separation from the military.

 The programme is aiming to reach more than 1.5 million children under five with mOPV2 this week in nine regions of South and Central Somalia in response to the ongoing detection of cVDPV2.

  • Environment sampling continues in five sites in Somalia. This week, no new positive samples have been reported. A total 28 positive environmental samples have been confirmed in 2018.

Between January and September 2018, UNICEF and partners have reached 162,750 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition (SAM) with lifesaving therapeutic nutrition treatment; representing 94 percent of its annual target.

  • No new cVDPV type 2 or type 3 cases have been confirmed this week. The last confirmed case was of type 3 in a five month old child who had never previously been vaccinated against polio.

  • The total number of cVDPV cases remains 12: five cVDPV2, six cVDPV3 and one case of a child with a coinfection of cVDPV2 and cVDPV3 virus.
