L'OIM travaille en collaboration avec le Gouvernement afin de mieux appréhender les dynamiques migratoires à Djibouti et comprendre le profil des migrants qui transitent dans le pays. Pour ce faire, l’OIM met en œuvre le suivi des flux de population, activité qui consiste à collecter des données dans les localités par lesquelles transitent les migrants. Cette activité a débuté en mai 2017 danslocalités et n'a cessé de grandir, jusqu'à atteindrepoints. Depuis Juin, deux points de suivi on était clôturé, ainsi réduisent ales point des suivi.

KEY MESSAGES

• Over the reporting period, a higher number of entries (246) were recorded compared to last week. 60 exits were recorded this week which is slightly lower compared to last weeks’ number.

• Majority of the new arrivals cited their reason for displacement into the IDP sites was due to lack of food (74%). In addition, 14% cited insecurity in their areas of origin (from Buale, Jamame and Jiliib) and 12% cited health as their reason for displacement.

  • This week there were 14 new arrivals and only 4 exits recorded at Dollow IDP camps. The number of new arrivals slightly increased compared to the previous week. In general, for the month of August, movements in Dolow IDP sites have remained significantly low compared with July entries.

• This week there were 158 new arrivals and only 48 exits at the Baidoa checkpoints.
Lowest recorded of exit since March of this year. This represents the fifth week in a row that the number of exits has remained below 200. In general, since mid-July all movements in and out of Baidoa IDP sites have remained relatively low compared with previous months.

A joint site verification exercise was conducted in Baidoa on 03-05 September 2018. The operation was led by CCCM partners, and included 36 participants from 3 government institutions, 5 INGOs, 3 NGOs, and 4 UN agencies. In total, 371 IDP sites, hosting 42,032 households, were assessed and mapped. Compared to the last site verification, there was decrease of 6 sites and 2,963 households.

A joint site verification exercise was conducted in Kismayo on 6-9 August 2018. The operation was led by CCCM partners, and included 72 participants from 4 government offices, 7 NGOs, and 1 UN agency. In total 134 IDP sites, hosting 10,934 households, were assessed and mapped. The number of IDP assessed has reduced by 25% compared to the last verification exercise conducted in January 2018.

Geneva – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 71,779 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2018 through 5 September, with 31,040 to Spain, the leading destination this year. This compares with 125,613 arrivals across the region through the same period last year, and 289,681 through a similar point (6 September) in 2016.

Welcome to the August edition of the UN Migration Agency Bulletin for the East and Horn of Africa.
Like in many parts of the globe, migration continues to dominate debates in our region. On 6 August, IOM and its partners, launched a Regional Migrant Response Plan for the Horn of Africa and Yemen appealing to the international community for USD 45 million. It is the first of such plan to be launched ever.

Hargeisa: IOM, the UN Migration Agency Sub-Office in Hargeisa facilitated the return of 63 Ethiopian migrants who became stranded at sea for six days when their boat engine failed. The migrants left Hargeisa in several groups after they had received medical attention, food, shelter, clothing and counselling through support from IOM.

Geneva – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 67,122 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2018 through 26 August, with 27,994 to Spain, the leading destination this year. This compares with 123,205 (172,362 for the entire year) arrivals across the region through the same period last year, and 272,612 at this point in 2016.

Baidoa – On Saturday (04/08) more than 13,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) participated in an environmental clean-up campaign organized by IOM, the UN Migration Agency, in coordination with the Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) outreach team in Baidoa, Somalia.

As part of efforts to bridge divisions and unite the diverse community groups to work toward the common goals of peace, development and reconciliation, the clean-up exercise focused on voluntarism among the IDPs and the host community.

Nairobi – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, and its partners launched, on 6 August, a Regional Migrant Response Plan (RMRP) for the Horn of Africa and Yemen through which they are appealing to the international community for USD 45 million. The plan details support to migrants on the move in the Horn of Africa and Yemen from 2018 to 2020.

Hargeisa - Migrants who choose to return to Somaliland now have access to Start Your Business training through the EU-IOM Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration in the Horn of Africa. The training launched this week in Hargeisa with more than 60 migrants, who opted to return from Libya instead of continuing their journeys to Europe. The training runs over five days. Organised by IOM, the UN Migration Agency sub-office in Hargeisa, the training follows a format developed by the International Labour Organization (ILO), and was delivered by local ILO-trained facilitators.

All of the new entries cited rejoining with their families (52%), Shortage of food (39%) and health reasons (9%) as their reasons for displacement into Baidoa.
