NAIROBI, 21 February 2017 – Already grappling with an extended dry spell, countries in Greater Horn of Africa are bracing for an even deeper drought, with the approach of the traditional March to May rainy season offering little cause for comfort.

Exacerbated by the El Niño weather phenomenon, below-average rainfall is worsening food security and water availability, straining the resilience of communities across the region.

20-YEAR REVIEW SHOWS 90% OF DISASTERS ARE WEATHER-RELATED; US, CHINA, INDIA, PHILIPPINES AND INDONESIA RECORD THE MOST

23 November 2015, GENEVA – A new report issued today by the UN, “The Human Cost of Weather Related Disasters”, shows that over the last twenty years, 90% of major disasters have been caused by 6,457 recorded floods, storms, heatwaves, droughts and other weather-related events.

The five countries hit by the highest number of disasters are the United States (472), China (441), India (288), Philippines (274), and Indonesia, (163).

YAOUNDE, 22 July 2015 – African governments have begun sketching out a continent-wide plan to implement the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, a 15-year global pact that seeks to rein in the impact of natural and man-made hazards.

On the eve of a key ministerial gathering in Cameroon’s capital Yaoundé, experts from across the continent probed ways to make sure that Africa’s disaster risk reduction dovetails with the Sendai Framework.

GENEVA, 29 February 2012 - The March to May rainfall season in the Greater Horn of Africa is likely to result in "near normal to below normal rainfall" over much of the region, according to a statement today from the 30th Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (GHACOF30).

This rainfall outlook applies in particular to areas plagued by drought in recent years including much of Somalia; Djibouti; eastern and northern Kenya; southern, eastern and north-eastern Ethiopia.
