  1. MAJOR CHANGES SINCE PREVIOUS VERSION OF THE HIP

The humanitarian context has faced numerous changes in the course of 2010 in DRC and Kenya. As a consequence DG ECHO has expanded and intensified its interventions. The trend observed in 2010, is likely to continue in 2011 and DG ECHO has decided to slightly increase the ECHO Flight's services in terms of destinations and frequency to very remote areas in order to facilitate the implementation of humanitarian actions which is heavily dependent on the air transport of partners' staff and cargo.

(Geneva, 17 July): Six months after the launch of the Humanitarian Appeal 2007, the United Nations, the International Organisation for Migration, and 220 non-governmental aid organisations still require $2.5 billion to respond to the world's most severe crises.

US$1.9 billion has been mobilised through the Appeals, equalling 43 per cent of funding requirements.

The United Nations conference targeting the $1 billion-a-year illicit trade in small arms continued today with speakers from the African continent among those calling urgently for a global crack down on illegal arms dealers and tighter arms regulations - especially the activities of brokers - whose deadly wares often fell into the hands of non-State actors and fuelled conflict, contributed to poverty, and stalled development in their fragile countries.

Six years after the World Food Summit in Rome, the commitments made at the summit have not been fulfilled. Action Against Hunger is calling on the Heads of State for international mobilization and determined action to end hunger. As international experts in the fight against hunger and malnutrition, Action Against Hunger wishes to highlight that:

  • Since 1996, Heads of State have not been successful in preventing new food crises. In Southern Africa alone, over 10 million people are on the brink of starvation unless immediate and large-scale action is taken.
