LUSAKA, ZAMBIA: Newly-appointed UNHCR Representative to Zambia, Ms. Pierrine Aylara, has assumed official duties after presenting her letters of credence in Lusaka to Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Chalwe Lombe, on Friday 4th August, 2017.

Ms. Aylara, a Benin-Swiss national, prior to her appointment to Zambia served in various field locations and at UNHCR’s Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

She has also held several stints at senior level within UNHCR in Mozambique and Angola as Representative.

WASHINGTON, May 27, 2016— The World Bank's Board of Executive Directors today approved a $20 million International Development Association (IDA)* credit to help support the Government of Zambia implement its program of local integration for long term refugees.

The Zambia Displaced Persons and Border Communities Project aims to improve access to livelihoods and socio-economic infrastructure for displaced people and host communities in the two targeted resettlement areas of Meheba in North-Western and Mayukwayukwa in the Western Provinces of Zambia.

LUSAKA, 6 November 2008 (IRIN) - A funding shortfall is jeopardising food supplies to about 3,000 of the most vulnerable refugees living in two of Zambia's largest camps, a senior UN refugee agency (UNHCR) official has told IRIN.

"We have received communications from WFP [World Food Programme] stating that from 2009 they will stop providing food to refugees at the Meheba and Mayukwayukwa refugee settlements.

A project called the Zambian Initiative Development is alleviating poverty among refugees and communities near refugee camps. It has helped over 600 thousand people, some of them asylum seekers. VOA English to Africa's Danstan Kaunda reports from Lusaka that Zambia is home to more than 120 thousand refugees from Angola, Rwanda, Somalia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Most of these refugees fled their countries because of conflict.

The Zambia Initiative is funded by Denmark, Japan, Sweden and the United States.
