Trends of Arrivals in the Mediterranean

From 20 to 26 March, 414 persons arrived by sea to Greece. Chios recorded the majority of sea arrivals (224), followed by Lesvos (72) and Leros (72). A total of 3,783 persons reached the Greek shores from 01 January until 26 March 2017.

Trends of Sea Arrivals

From 01 January 2017, 20,580 persons arrived by sea, including 3,369 to Greece (as of 21 March), 19,549 to Italy (as of 21 March) and 1,000 to Spain (as of 31 January). As of 19 March, 537 people have died or gone missing while trying to reach Europe by sea, compared with 5,022 in the whole of 2016.

OVERVIEW

In 2016, between January and December, 362,376 people crossed the Mediterranean Sea, risking their lives to reach Europe. These new arrivals are in addition to more than one million refugees and migrants who made the journey across the Mediterranean Sea on unseaworthy boats in 2015.

In 2016, the number of those arriving decreased substantially after March. Of those reaching European shores so far this year, 53% came from the ten countries currently producing the most refugees globally.

In 2015, a significant number of refugees and migrants made the journey across the Mediterranean Sea risking their lives to reach Europe. More than one million people arrived on unseaworthy boats last year while the number of those arriving in 2016 significantly decreased after March. As of 30 September 2016, some 303,838 people had crossed the Mediterranean Sea to Europe. Of those reaching European shores so far this year, 61% were nationals of the world’s top 10 refugee-producing countries.

Switzerland - IOM reports that 345,440 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2016 through 20 November, arriving mostly in Greece and Italy. Some 171,264 people have arrived in Greece and 168,542 in Italy during 2016. The total is well below the number of arrivals at this point in 2015, by which time some 883,393 migrants and refugees had made the journey.

Following the fire that destroyed a large part of the Moria refugee camp on Lesbos, life seems to be back to normal - but not for everyone. Marianna Karakoulaki and Dimitris Tosidis report from Lesbos.

Compared to the refugee camps on the Greek mainland, Moria looks like a terrifying creation. A triple-level wired fence at the front, barbed wire everywhere, and the Greek military, police and riot police constantly present. It seems like an open-air prison with thousands of people living inside. Media access is restricted.

Italy - IOM reports that 266,026 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2016 through 17 August, arriving mostly in Greece and Italy, where 101,507 migrants or refugees have arrived during 2016.

This total is slightly lower than the pace recorded through 2015’s first eight months, when a total of 354,618 arrivals were recorded crossing the Mediterranean, the majority from Turkey to Greece.

IOM Rome reported on Thursday that some 730 migrants had been rescued in the Channel of Sicily since August 10, or about 100 per day.

Italy - IOM reports that 263,636 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2016 through 7 August, arriving mostly in Greece and Italy. Italy saw 24,000 migrants and refugee arrivals during the month of July.

IOM Rome reported Monday that 1,241 migrants have been rescued in the Channel of Sicily since Friday 5 August. According to the Italian Ministry of Interior, some 100,244 migrants have arrived by sea in Italy so far this year. This is virtually the same as in 2015, when arrivals at this point totalled 100,179.

Deaths so far this year are 2,861 compared with 1,838 through the first six months of 2015. In other words, fatalities on the Mediterranean Sea in 2016 stand over 1,000 ahead of last year’s mid-year total, with one week remaining before 2016’s mid-year point.

  • The overall number of refugees and migrants in Greece, including the islands, was reported as 57 113 on 12 June.

  • On 13 June, evacuation began of informal sites at Polykastro, close to the northern border and the former Idomeni site. Around 300 officers took part in the operation to relocate a total of around 4 000 migrants from the makeshift sites into state-run facilities.
