NAIROBI, 26 December (IRIN) - At least four students were killed and 15 others wounded when heavily armed gunmen opened fire on a school bus in south Mogadishu on Wednesday, a local journalist told IRIN on Thursday. The incident took place in Wardigley district when the gunmen attacked the bus shortly after it had picked up the students from the Ahmad Gurey School, near Ali Kamiin junction. "Those killed were between the ages 16 and 19," said the source.

The Landmine Update is the International Campaign to Ban Landmines quarterly newsletter. This edition is followed by a calendar of upcoming events (available online). To date, 130 countries have ratified the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty, and an additional 16 have signed it. The most recent accessions are Afghanistan (11 September), Comoros (19 September) and Central African Republic (8 November), while recent ratifications include Cameroon (19 September) and Gambia (23 September).

Slowed down by a limp, he carefully makes his way over the fields, and is pleased the current crop is coming up well.

Minister for Development Cooperation Agnes van Ardenne is allocating an extra €5 million to relieve the famine in Africa. The money will go to start the appeal for southern Africa and the Horn of Africa launched by the joint Dutch aid agencies on 13 December.

"Hunger threatens the lives of millions of people, most of them women and children. We are facing a disaster of such proportions that we have to do everything we possibly can to turn the tide," Van Ardenne announced.

Whenever a disaster of this kind occurs, the Dutch aid agencies join forces to raise funds.

I am delighted to have the opportunity today to address the Foreign Affairs Committee on the subject of the food crises in the Horn of Africa and in southern Africa.

As we look forward to Christmas the figures concerning famine emanating from Africa are stark. They serve as a damning indictment of our collective failure to address the needs of the most vulnerable at the beginning of a new millennium.

It is estimated that at least 28 million people will be affected by the current food shortages in the Horn of Africa and southern Africa.
