Situation Overview

Somalia continues to face drought conditions spanning over the last four consecutive poor rainy seasons that severely aggravated the humanitarian crisis. The current Deyr season (October – December) started late and performed approximately 50 per cent below average rainfall performance in most parts of the country. Slightly better than 2016, but crop production is expected to be limited. The first half of November by most parts of southern and central Somalia have received above-average rainfall (OCHA Humanitarian Bulletin, 2017).

The arresting images of young women and men in white T-shirts and red ribbons tied around their heads clearing debris at the 14 October bomb blast site in Mogadishu was uplifting to victims of the heinous terror attack against innocent civilians.

The young women and men who came together under the umbrella group “Gurman Qaran” (National Emergency in English) volunteered in the search and rescue operations and led a blood donation campaign for the victims injured in the attack that killed more than 300 people.

SISh (Somaliland shilling)-using areas: CPI declined mildly (3%) during November 2017 but increased (22%) compared to a year ago (November 2016) due to higher cereal prices this year.
