A new midwifery curriculum for Somali midwifery schools has been approved by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) as adequately meeting globally accepted midwifery education standards. This means that the UNFPA supported training is now recognised to be of international standards and graduates from Somali midwifery schools will be internationally recognised.

THE IMPACT OF ARMED CONFLICT ON CHILDREN

Trends and developments: 2016

Despite some progress in certain country situations, increasingly complex conflicts have resulted in widespread violations against children with occurrences of 6 grave violations documented.1

In 2016, there were at least 4,000 verified grave violations by Government forces and over 11,500 by non-State armed groups. Many more violations remain unattributed.

Grâce aux des opérations de lutte en cours, les infestations du Criquet pèlerin ont diminué en décembre dans les zones affectées par les récentes résurgences en Mauritanie, s’étendant au sud du Maroc, et en Érythrée. Néanmoins, une stricte vigilance devrait être maintenue car les conditions écologiques continuent à être favorables et une autre reproduction va probablement avoir lieu en janvier et en février.

Background

WV Somalia has been implementing nutrition programming as a component of an overall food security and resilience program implemented by WFP in partnership with different organizations in South Central Somalia in Luuq, Dolow, Balet Hawa and Elwak districts in Gedo region and in Wajid and Baidoa in the Bay and Bakool regions.

WV through local partners has been implementing TSFP and BSFP with OTP, SC and MCHN implemented by other partners.

Shipment to Somaliland, Puntland & Ethiopia from Turkey, consisting of; 6,000 tons of flour and 5,000 tons of sugar totalling 11,000 tons of food relief by sea-way, delivered 2,500 tons of flour and sugar to Ethiopia (via Djibouti), 5,000 tons of flour and sugar to Somaliland (from Berbera Port), and 3,500 tons of flour and sugar to Puntland (Bosaso Port) on 8.10.2016. In addition, a donation of 178,844 units of baby diapers made to the Turkish Red Crescents Directorate of Istanbul was loaded on the aforementioned vessel and delivered to the given countries.

1. GENERAL SITUATION

Disasters due to climate change and rising armed conflicts in different regions led Somalia to its worst humanitarian crises in history. Natural disasters such as drought and floods have affected half of the total population. Increase in epidemic diseases, malnutrition and loss of income has made families desperate in the fight against poverty. Communities were left internally displaced due to both disasters and the insecure environment.
