DADAAB, Kenya, Dec 31 (UNHCR) – Health workers at the world's largest refugee complex in Kenya are gaining the upper hand in battling a cholera outbreak that has killed 10 people and sickened around 1,000 others since it broke out last month amid rains linked to El Niño.

Cholera, an often fatal water-borne bacterial illness, which causes fever, vomiting and watery diarrhoea, flared up in mid-November at Dadaab, which comprises five camps hosting 347,000 refugees and asylum seekers, the majority fleeing violence in Somalia.

As of 30 December, the funding gap of the 2015 UN-coordinated inter-agency appeals is US$9.6 billion which means that 48 per cent of the required funds remain unmet.

During December, newly reported contributions to FTS totalled $736 million for humanitarian response: for response plans specifically, $81.7 million for Iraq, $80.6 million for Yemen, and $41.4 million for Niger. As reported to FTS by 30 December, over $1.7 billion of humanitarian funding remain in outstanding pledges (of which $404 million is allocated for the coordinated response plans).

  • Maize grain, was the single most traded commodity in the East Africa region in 2015 as depicted in Figure 1. There were also significant informal cross-border trade of dry beans, cooking bananas, locally produced rice, sorghum, sesame; imported sugar, wheat and flour.

  • Most of the primary staple food commodities were informally traded while a majority of the processed food commodities were formally traded in the region in 2015.

WASHINGTON—The outgoing United Nations envoy to Somalia, Nicholas Kay, says the country has an “unstoppable momentum” toward being a stable and secure country.

In his final interview before leaving office, Kay told VOA that Somalia has managed to convert a dream of being a federal Somalia into reality. The country now has five interim regional administrations and federal member states, which he says brings government and accountability closer to the people.

The report on the status of polio eradication to WHO's Executive Board also summarizes the progress on the Polio Endgame Plan, and on Resolution WHA68.3, adopted by the World Health Assembly (WHA) in May 2015. The year to come will need strengthened momentum to build on these gains and deliver a polio-free world.
