12 November 2018: In Toulfé village, Loroum province, four armed men on motorcycles stormed into the General Education College, where they threatened and lashed teachers before ordering them to leave the school premises. From the 27 – 29 November, the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) met in Nairobi to review the outbreak response in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya, and preparedness measures in Yemen, Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan, South Sudan and Djibouti in case of international spread.

Regional Flow Monitoring Network

30 FMPs and nine mobile FMPs are currently operational in seven countries.

In Burkina Faso, data was collected from five FMPs during the month of October 2018. An average of 1,117 individuals were observed crossing Flow Monitoring Points daily - a slight decrease of three per cent from the September figures.

Since gaining independence in 1962, Uganda has provided asylum to people fleeing war and persecution in neighboring countries, especially South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, Rwanda and Burundi.

SITUATION

• As of October 2018, approximately 1.1 million refugees and asylum-seekers were seeking shelter in Uganda—the largest refugee population on the African continent—including more than 780,000 South Sudanese and over 284,000 Congolese. An estimated 60 percent of these refugees are younger than 18 years of age.

The Contingency Fund for Emergencies (CFE) has been a gamechanger for WHO. It allows WHO to respond rapidly to disease outbreaks and health emergencies - often in 24 hours or less. This saves lives and helps prevent unnecessary suffering. Furthermore, a quick response dramatically reduces the costs of controlling outbreaks and emergencies, as well as the wider social and economic impacts.

Highlights

10 out of the 21 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa Region (ESAR) have reported more than 36,820 cholera / AWD cases and 433 deaths (Case Fatality Rate, 1.2%), since the beginning of 2018.

These countries include; Angola, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe accounts for 28.6 % (10,529) of the total case load reported this year, followed by Somalia at 17% (6,273).
