A review of laws and policies in Sierra Leone identified key areas for reform in creating a more effective HIV response.

Findings of the Legal Environment Assessment for HIV in Sierra Leone, conducted by the Sierra Leone National HIV/AIDS Secretariat and with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), were examined by 80 stakeholders at a two-day validation workshop from 11-12 December 2017.

• WFP received a mission from the Renewed Efforts Against Child Hunger and Undernutrition (REACH) from Rome to review the progress of REACH activities in Sierra Leone.

• WFP delivered a one-month food ration to the Don Bosco Fambul orphanage and St George’s Foundation, which are taking care of mudslide affected children and women as well as over 100 youth volunteers involved in the rescue and body retrieval during the emergency response.

On 14 August, heavy rains, a mudslide and flash floods destroyed hundreds of homes and left many dead, injured or missing in Sierra Leone. In all, more than 500 houses were buried and destroyed and some 6000 people were severely affected. So far, more than 500 bodies have been recovered, with the number expected to rise. A mass burial for 300 people brought the country together and hardened the commitment to collectively recover from the tragedy.

It is the first time that Sierra Leone has reported on a complete range of internationally agreed indicators that span the entire health system, and as such makes a significant improvement on previous HSPRs.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) reiterates its call for a clear roadmap and strong political commitment from affected governments and all international stakeholders, towards removing longstanding barriers and implementing proven simplified strategies that will boost lifesaving treatment for 4.7 million living with HIV not yet accessing antiretroviral therapy (ARV).
