New York--The Global Environment Facility’s (GEF) Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) approved on 26 September a US$43.63m grant for a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)-led initiative to strengthen climate information and early warning systems in Africa.

The programme will be implemented in 10 countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Liberia, Malawi, São Tomé and Príncipe, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

Summary: CHF 167,769 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 15 January 2013 to support the National Society in delivering assistance to some 2,253 beneficiaries in four locations/districts affected by the fire disaster.

The initial objective of Sierra Leone Red Cross Society (SLRCS) intervention was to support the impoverished fire disaster victims in Bo, Pujehun, Bonthe and Moyamba districts who were left languishing in neighbouring villages as a result of the disaster.

Overview

The DREF allocated a total amount of CHF 22,836,393 in 2012. Seventy-five per cent of the allocations, CHF 17,076,253, were made as grants to small-scale operations implemented by National Societies for which no emergency appeal was launched, known as DREF operations. CHF 5,760,140 was allocated as loans of start-up funding to emergency appeals.

April 15th 2013, Sierra Leone: The telecommunications industry and International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) have teamed up to use mobile phone technology to save lives in Sierra Leone.

Using an innovative location-targeted SMS system called the Trilogy Emergency Relief Application (TERA), the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society (SLRCS), with support from the British and Icelandic Red Cross Societies, will be able to reach 36,000 people an hour at the touch of a button with warnings of impending fires, floods, or outbreaks of disease.

As of the 31st of March 2013, the Global Environment Facility’s Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) has granted USD 18.6 million to be channeled by the African Development Bank (AfDB) to Sierra Leone, Uganda and Mauritania for project concepts to help climate-proof their water sectors. This work is regarded as a critical element of these countries’ moves toward climate-resilient poverty reduction and sustainable development.

How can agencies like WFP be sure that food assistance doesn’t jeopardize the safety of the people they're trying to help? This is the question asked by the authors of a new book exploring the measures WFP has taken to keep people safe while providing them with assistance.

The 2008 attacks in Kandahar – in which Taliban members threw acid at girls going to school – prompted WFP to assess whether food assistance as an incentive to girls’ school attendance may be increasing their exposure to harm.
