Norway has provided more than NOK 500 million to the efforts to fight Ebola in West Africa. The infection rate is now greatly reduced. Norway is therefore scaling down its efforts in cooperation with the authorities in the countries concerned and the UN. This means that Norwegian health workers will return to Norway at the end of March.

Norway is leading the work to develop the world’s first vaccine against the Ebola virus in Guinea, where the epidemic first broke out. The Ebola epidemic is continuing to spread in West Africa. So far, over 15 000 people have been infected with the virus, and it has had an enormous impact on whole societies.

‘The Ebola outbreak in West Africa is the worst the world has ever seen, and is a serious threat to health, security and development both in the region and globally. Unless the international community, and particularly the UN and WHO, scale up and speed up the response, the situation will continue to deteriorate,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende.

Norway is the first country to support the World Bank’s new multidonor fund for the fight against Ebola. ‘It is positive that the World Bank is setting up a fund to put the health sector in the affected countries in a better position to deal with the crisis. Norway will contribute nearly NOK 70 million to the fund,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende.

Norway is doubling its support for the fight against Ebola, and will be contacting the UN, the UK Government and other relevant actors to offer personnel and equipment for their operations. A new contribution of NOK 89 million brings Norway’s total funding for the fight against Ebola to just over NOK 184 million.

‘The Ebola outbreak is spreading faster than the world can respond to it. There are not enough health workers in the field, and dying people are being turned away by hospitals. Norway is therefore providing a further NOK 58.7 million to international efforts to combat the outbreak,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende.

Statement by Ambassador Deputy Representative Strømmen

Mr. President,

We commend the Panel of Experts on their thorough work and welcome their report and their recommendations on improving the adherence of the sanctions regime. The report is a vital follow-up to the adoption of Resolution 1306 last year, and it is important that the report is discussed in an open meeting like this, thus focusing publicly on the issues of diamonds and arms as they relate to the conflict in Sierra Leone.
