Aid agency will be managing Ebola treatment centre by Christmas


GOAL is calling on the Irish artists from the Band Aid single to visit West Africa before Christmas, and capitalise on the public support they have helped generate.

In less than five minutes after it was launched on Monday morning, sales of the Band Aid 30 single, Do They Know It’s Christmas, raised more than £1 million for the fight against Ebola in West Africa.

GOAL Chief Operations Officer, Jonathan Edgar will meet with British International Development Secretary, Justine Greening today (Tuesday, November 4th), to discuss the worrying escalation in the number of Ebola cases in the Port Loko region of Sierra Leone.

Although efforts to halt the virus in other parts of the country are starting to bear fruit, the focal point of the crisis in Sierra Leone has now switched to the west, where the number of new cases is rapidly outpacing available beds.

Sierra Leone has been in the midst of a major public health emergency since May 2014 as a result of the 2014 Ebola crisis. The outbreak is the largest in history, and the first in West Africa.

Since the President declared a State of Emergency on July 30th, Police Officers have been deployed to quarantine houses, and to secure checkpoints, hospitals and clinic facilities. They have done so with little or no training on the nature of the outbreak, how to minimize their personal risk of infection, or how to perform their duties in these highly unusual circumstances.

GOAL is urging the international community to come to the aid of Sierra Leone, whose government and health systems are struggling to cope with a rapid rise in cases of the deadly Ebola virus.

Sierra Leone has not faced an Ebola outbreak of this scale before and there is a lack of understanding about the virus and how it is spread, all of which is contributing to an increase in cases.
