FREETOWN, November 16 2017 --- At a handover ceremony today, WHO in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB) donated 75 vehicles to Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS). The vehicles, which include 18 cars and 57 motorbikes, will be used to support disease surveillance and response to outbreaks and other public health emergencies.

On October 21, 2015, the African Development Bank Group’s (AfDB) Board of Executive Directors approved a US $33.3-million grant to set up a Post Ebola Recovery Social Investment Fund (PERSIF) intended to support the implementation of the National Post Ebola Recovery strategies of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

On October 21, 2015, the Rural Water and Sanitation Initiative (RWSSI) Trust Fund of the African Development Bank (AfDB) announced a EUR 3-million grant to support the implementation of the National Post Ebola Recovery Strategies of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The RWSSI Trust Fund donation responds to the need to build resilience to Ebola in the countries affected by the epidemic through sustainable improvement of water and sanitation for the most vulnerable segments of population. It is expected to play a catalytic role in improving community response to outbreaks.

On March 3, Ginette Nzau-Muteta, African Development Bank Health Manager, spoke at a high-level conference on “Ebola: From emergency to recovery” hosted by the European Union in Brussels. Nzau-Muteta presented the Bank’s efforts in the fight against Ebola with a health systems strengthening emergency program of US $223 million as well as a US $300 million road development and facilitation of transport project within the Mano River Union, which will bring new infrastructure and economic relief to the three Ebola-affected countries.

  • While several elections will take place in 2015, the region is experiencing a mix of progress and setbacks, with encouraging transition in Burkina Faso occurring on the back of an alleged coup attempt in Gambia and the escalation of violence in Nigeria.

  • The region has demonstrated a certain degree of resilience towards the economic impact from Ebola outbreak and falling commodity prices. Such impacts have been mitigated and offset by the increasing diversification of West African economies.

Executive Directors of the African Development Bank Group on Friday, February 13, 2015 in Abidjan discussed the imperative to eradicate the Ebola Virus Disease, which has affected nearly 23,000 and killed over 9,000 people in West Africa (mainly in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia).

Reviewing the Bank’s efforts to contain the disease, the AfDB Board members observed that the disease has in effect exposed the weaknesses of healthcare and related systems in the countries concerned in particular and on the African continent as a whole.
