The three personnel, all of whom have vast collective experience in West Africa, will be deployed to the Embassy of Ireland in Freetown under the Emergency Civilian Assistance Team initiative, established by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to respond to international crises.

Minister for Development, Trade Promotion and North South Co-operation, Seán Sherlock T.D., today announced €600,000 in funding to support communities battling the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone and Liberia, the two countries which have been worst affected by the epidemic.

Ireland will also provide 42 tonnes of emergency supplies, including blankets, tents, mosquito nets and water tanks.

€650,000 is being made available to support the relief activities of Oxfam, Plan Ireland and Concern Worldwide to prevent the spread of the disease and to assist those already affected. This funding will provide clean and safe water and sanitation facilities in a country where it is estimated that less than half the population have access to safe water.

Ireland to play an enhanced role in distribution of UN humanitarian funds

Conor Lenihan TD, Minister of State for Irish Aid, today announced funding of €31 million in response to the United Nations' appeal for Humanitarian Aid in 2007. The pledge comes in response to the United Nations' annual Consolidated Appeals Process (CAP) for Humanitarian Aid. The total amount requested by the UN globally is €3 billion.

For the first time, nearly a third of the Irish Aid funding to the Appeal will go to Pooled Funds.
